Not a good idea to use a 50 yr old van to go 4x4 in...

Not that I would be doing anything crazy fellas. Mostly just think its a cool build to cruise around in and take camping and such. Nothing crazy... but I’m curious, why wouldn’t it be if it was done right?

The best way to do it would be to find a beat, rusted and otherwise dead one of any vintage through the mid 90's and use it for a doanner vehicle. But that may be a very hard thing to do. But finding one to that you can inspect (perhaps often) so you can see what parts are used and any modified parts so you can gather what you need and/or make is probably the next best reasonable option.

I have found a couple of examples of guys converting these. Both of which used a dana 44 for the front with a 3 link setup and a dodge 8 3/4 rear in the back. Theres was still a good bit of work (I’m not sure what exactly) but they seem to have worked pretty well. One of these was a 78 used in a dirt every day Episode where they took it on the gambler 500 race.

Micah is right. Find a rotten old VanCharger and use it for the 4x4 conversion. My 4x4 van was done by an outside company. Pathfinder built the factory ordered VanCharger.

It’s still going to be a lot of work.

Done right as in replacing most of the structural steel... 50 yrs old most likely has rusty rails and floor boards...rust is a weakness ... steel fatigue's over time ... Its also a light weight 1/2 ton veh ... the last place you want to be is out in the back woods and have some 50yr old pc finally give.

Ya dont have to be getting crazy to get stuck.

The right way would be to get a newer dodge 3/4 or 1 ton chassis to get some beef under your ride and trans plant your body on to it, good luck on your build.

Post pic's if you can ... we love van porn ! Love your jack stands ...
