The girls called me yesterday with a problem. The van would start and idle fine but started to mis-fire like crazy and lurch along if they gave it more than a tiny sniff of throttle.

Last night they picked up a fuel pump and filter which they changed out this morning (I had replaced the filter already but it seemed daft to change the pump without replacing the filter again). This seems to have fixed the problem but they created another by draining some coolant when removing the lower radiator hose to get at the fuel pump and not knowing they had to refill the radiator rather than the header tank. This pretty quickly led to overheating but they got that sorted and seem to have got away with it. Fortunately they had a gallon of coolant and a gallon of distilled water with them.

I would have liked to be there to help them out but they seem to have managed. Glad I kitted them out with tools and maintenance fluids before they left.

After more than 8,000 miles, up the West Coast and up-and-down through various National Parks in the Rockies, they are now in New England and had another issue:

Happened very suddenly according to my daughter. I guess the bearing cap retainer failed and it just fell out. Driveshaft is damaged just enough they are looking for a used replacement to rebuild. Fortunately only 1-1/2 miles from a shop that can do the work.

If anything it might need to be rebalanced but not rebuilt ..

That bearing cap receptacle is likely no longer round and would no longer allow the C clip to be sent home. A new cap on a new U joint could suffer the same fate quickly if the clip was loose or not quite set to full depth, and it would be hard to tell if it were not.

I suspect there was a weird vibration right about 55 for a few thousand miles before it let go, but would nearly go away at 65mph, so 65 it was.

Reminds me my U joints are due for a couple pumps from the grease gun.

I had a u-joint failure on my Chevy going up I-83 in PA traveling at about 80mph. This was AFTER I had new u-joints installed. Luckily the driveshaft didn't fall out onto the highway. I have AAA, so I had the van towed back to the shop that did the work. They replaced the driveshaft/u-joints under warranty.

It was pretty scary.
