I purchased the van from an estate sale. There was really no information for the van. The engine is all there with the factory A/C. All I was told that it last ran in 1991. I looked through the van and noticed that there was not spark plugs wires and the distributor was not tighten down. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and points. The van turns over but no luck on starting. It did back-fire through the exhaust. I was looking for the engine ground cable to make sure that it was secure but no luck. Does anyone know where the location of the engine ground cable? Does this van even have a ground cable connected to the engine? | | | Re: 1974 Chevy G20 Wont start... | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 2,964 Likes: 63 veteran | veteran Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 2,964 Likes: 63 | Hasn't ran in 30 years, the first thing I would do would be a complete cleaning of the fuel system and carb. A few other items would be, cooling system flush, brake system, new tires. | | | Re: 1974 Chevy G20 Wont start... | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 Supreme Master | Supreme Master Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 | Sounds like she's getting spark. I would try to get the van started off a 5 gallon can of fresh gas (run the intake line from the fuel pump into the gas can) and go from there. Timing could be way off since the dist was loose. Carb is probably going to need a rebuild for sure.
I think the ground cable from the battery runs directly to the engine and there should be a jumper from the engine to the frame (I think, but not 100% sure on that)

Just made sure the timing and the firing order was correct. I started to clean out the fuel system and notice that the gas tank is different. It seems larger and just different from other tanks that are OEM for this year of the van. On the side of the tank it says DQ 1154 Irvin Works United States Steel. has anybody every seen these tanks? | | | Re: 1974 Chevy G20 Wont start... | Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,266 Likes: 43 old hand | old hand Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,266 Likes: 43 | My 73 G20 had a 50 gallon steel tank that was aftermarket to deal with the gas crisis of the era. I don’t know if mine was that brand, I never tried to find markings but I bought it from the original owner so he told me the story about it. I’ve even seen a few ads in vintage mags during that time
