So I have been having trouble with my 1991 Chevy G20. I just recently had a mechanic install a crate 4.3 into it. The crate was just the block and and everything inside, then they used most of my old parts to put it back together and get it running. They wanted to bypass the smog pump because they said the one inhaled was bad. I didnt want to do that so they got it rebuilt. There has been alot of little kinks that got fixed but, the belt was squealing pretty bad when they gave me the van. I replaced the idler pulley and alternator and it stopped. But the smog pump pulley looks out of line from the other pulleys, and I have had the nut come off of the alternator 2 different times. The first time it wore the threads from the pulley itself riding on them sloppy and then threw my belt. So I replaced the alternator then about 4 weeks later the nut came of as I was warning up my before going somewhere and I heard it fall off and turn of the van. I'm trying to figure out if this is happening because the smog pump if not aligned correctly so its putting a warp in my belt and different pressure to the alternator pulley. Or if it's just a factory malfunction on the alternator. Or maybe if the smog pump I have is the wrong one. I noticed the mechanic had made a bracket themselves to push on the smog pump,it doesn't look like a brace. Or if the smog pump bracket is just bent, because actually one of the smog pump bolts through the bracket broke before I had even had trouble with the nut come of the alternator pulley. Do any of you have a opinion or maybe has had a problem similar to this.

Hi there. You may want to post this in the Chevy troubleshooting section for better visibility.

Looks like one of the moderators moved it here. It's possible the brackets are bent or maybe it could the wrong smog pump. I'm not 100% what years used a smog pump (my 93 doesn't have one) but you may want to try a local junk yard for a new bracket and grab the smog pump to compare with the one you have.

Dudevan being a 91 you should have a metal bracket serpentine system, make sure the back of the power steering pump has the support bracket from back of pump to 1st manifold bolt on driver side, if not the bracket will flex a good bit.

When in doubt..get the sawzall out..

Make sure the harmonic balancer is on correctly. If there is any run-out in it (wobble or play forward and backward) it will cause problems. This can be caused due to using the incorrect tool being used to remove it from one motor and put it on the next as the rubber mid section gets distorted. You can test it for run -out using a dial indicator if you can get a loan of one.

I agree with the rest of the guys. It sounds like a misalignment and/or a bad vibration problem. What's the belt look like? Has it stayed on long enough to show any unusual wear?

I tried to loosen the air pump yesterday and make some adjustments to align it with the other pulleys but it didn't work. Today I purchased a new belt that doesn't use the smog pump and was able to get it on with having to take out the smog pump and now I get really see that the smog pump is pretty bad out of alignment. I'm thinking that the smog pump is the wrong one or the mount is bent. Until then I have bypassed the pump, but can anyone tell me if that is going give me problems. I wasn't able to test drive it I was only able to start it and let it run for a little while. I did notice that it backfires now when I give it quick throttle and let off. I would like to try and fix this issue and keep the smog pump hooked up so I don't have any issues with getting it smogged in the future.
