Okay, so as I said, I will probably be unloading on here for advice, knowledge, and assistance. I'll start with my THREE most pertinent questions at this point in time:

1. How in the HELL am I supposed to get the door handle off my slider? It's a '73 G10. I had a spare door from a later 70's model with a different "L" handle, and it was not a problem. This one, however....It has a square end on the handle which appears to simply be pressed into a sleeve on the inside of the door mechanism behind the panel. I have looked everywhere, and can find no set screw, retainer ring, or ANYTHING that holds it in place. However, there HAS to be something, otherwise when new I think the handle would have just pulled right out of the sleeve. I read somewhere that someone soaked it with WD-40 for a week and then they finally knocked it out, but I don't buy that is the case. Anyone know how to get it out? My factory manual, simply states "remove door handle". Yeah right.....

2. My manual ALSO simply states "Turn the vent assembly 90 degrees and carefully remove by guiding up and out" with regard to the vent window assemblies. These things are more work to wrestle with than a python. I have ground down both assembles so they are now just a skeleton of their former selves in an attempt to not beat the hell out of the window surround sheet metal. Once it is painted, I am beyond apprehensive about how to get them back in without jacking up the new color. Any advice?

3. Along that same topic, I have taken apart both door internals completely, looking to install new (well just not scratched) glass, locks, etc. I have cleaned and painted all of the window crank mechansims as well. I was very careful to make sure I re-assembled everything back the same way I took things apart. Now, on BOTH doors, I have an issue with being able to even open the doors with the windows up. What happens is that the "X" assembly that makes up the window crank has two nylon or plastic wheels, one on each end of the arms. One of them gets inserted into the window sash channel; however, the other one, which points in toward the interior, does not get used for ANYTHING, as far as I can see. Is this some form of universal part that may use it in some other installation? Regardless, as the window is raised, this roller rides up and then catches the door handle rod that runs from the handle iteslf to the locking latch. It then prevents the door handle from rotating and allowing the latch to release. I have checked the rod installation and it can't be installed any other way, so I know that is right. Can anyone explain what I am doing wrong, and what those unused rollers are for?

That's pretty much what I had to do. I was struggling like you to get the handle out and I found once I removed the inside handle the square had twisted from years of use and wouldn't allow it to slide out through the square hole in the door. I ground the inside of the part to be square again and with some penetrating oil I was able to slide it out and paint the door. The inside handle was sloppy because of it but luckily I found a NOS one on ebay and ordered it and installed it with out much issue.

Two words..

Gull wing

Your van is the perfect candidate in the condition it’s in. Pre paint, no window slider door, shitty stock door function.

For the vent windows, Vanning Mike did a great video on removal of those and some other general door related stuff that might help.

I have one of those handles for sale but as I live in Ireland it might be cheaper getting one locally. If you can't find one and want me to get a shipping price let me know.

And yeah there is just one screw holding it on as Tyteric said it just gets mashed over the years. You will most likely need the outer handle too.
