Can anyone tell me if you can put an instrument cluster from a 1981 g20 into a 1995 g20? Is it a direct swap?

The short answer is no.

Clusters are very easy to find. Why not just use the correct one?

Because I hate the look of the mid 90’s cluster.

The speedometers are different, the early one runs on a cable, the ones after 1990 or so are electronic. The wiring is totally different as well.

However, the bolt patterns and bezels are pretty close to identical. You can take your existing cluster, and mix/match parts from the old cluster. Expect dremel work, but if you just want to change the look, it can be done. The tricky part will be the actual outside bezel surround that goes around the gauges.

I just did the opposite, and transplanted a 90s speedometer into my 84 cluster to get an electronic speedometer that works with my newer transmission. Lots of dremel work to make it fit, but it works!

Your easiest solution would probably be to look at what aftermarket manufacturers offer. Places like Autometer, Bosch, and Dakota Digital. Then you could make it however you want.
