1995 Chevy G20 Conversion. It started out as a engine stutter going up a slight hill one night. The stutter would dissipate as I let up on the accelerator. Then after a mile or so, or a chance to cool down. It went away. This was in August 2019. Never happened again until a couple of weeks ago accelerating up a fairly large hill. Once again backed off the accelerator and it was fine until I had to accelerate a little harder. After being parked a few hours no sign of any issues. Took it in and guy thought maybe a fuel filter. So while I was there did the whole tune up, which included new fuel filter. All seemed well till I drove it about 18 miles to a local theater, about mile 17, went to accelerate past a car and stutter came back....you know the story, laid off the accelerator and got to theater. Saw play, drove home, no issues.

Now mechanic says catalytic converter, but I literally just passed my smog (California) the same day I had tune up. Any help/ advice greatly appreciated. I'm on a fixed income, and can't afford to just throw parts at it. Hard to find a god mechanic around here. Thanks again

We suffered from similar symptoms on our Dodge van for years. Tried all sorts of things to remedy it including tune-ups, new fuel filters, etc.

Problem primarily occurred when going up grade of varying degrees. Eventually, bought an IR temp gun and tested temps on pipe entering cat, on pipe exiting cat and after cat when the vehicle was at operating temperature. There should be a temperature rise on the outgoing pipe. The change in ours was nothing and sometimes less on the outgoing pipe. We knew it wasn't working. Still it was a year until now when we finally cut it off and opened it up. Sure enough the catalyst had broken up in to seven pieces... three of which had migrated back to the muffler. We were getting blocked now and then in one or both locations when going up grades as the pieces were blown or rolled toward the outflowing pipes.

Also, we did not have an oxygen sensor on ours. I have read that you can remove it then drive the vehicle and see if your get an improvement in performance. We did essentially the same thing by drilling two holes into the pipe prior to the cat and found an improvement in performance which again confirmed the cat was not working.

None of this is the say that yours is not working just that it doesn't cost very much to test it... Free to remove the O2 sensor and try that test and only about $30 to buy a decent IR temp gun (you may even be able to rent one at the local auto store).

Good luck

Thanks, I guess I'm gonna check the Cat. Hopefully that's it.

No check engine light I assume.
Sure sounds and acts like a partially clogged Cat to me.
They can still pass emissions with a restricted converter. They just won't run too well when the thing gets hot.

We'll cross our fingers for ya. smile

Don't really want to remove it.
Replaced the Cat on our "95 a couple of years ago with a hi-flow. No emission inspection anymore here in ATL because it's 25 years old but it actually runs better with one as that's the way the ECM is set up to operate. So you'd need a Cat even if you didn't live in that god forsaken place out there .... lol

Just kiddin' ......a little. angel
