I’m looking at a 1973 Dodge van. There’s no vin tag on the dashboard in the usual location, but there is a metal data plate in the door jamb with the vin number on it, but it’s not attached with the rosette type factory style vin rivets. It’s affixed with generic round head rivets like you pick up at the hardware store.
Is this legit ?
I had a 64 Plymouth Valiant that came from the factory with those generic round rivets. NC state had a real problem with it when they did their theft inspection and even with proof from the Plymouth archives they still didn’t believe they were factory and thought someone had tampered with it and wouldn’t issue a title for it. I’m trying to prepare for the same problem but I can’t find any evidence to support my defense. Any help would be appreciated.

My 70,71,72 B-van owners manual doesn't even mention VIN...

My Chilton Full Size Vans 67-88 Repair Manual says that "On 1970 - 1980 models, the plate is located on the rear face of the driver's side door."

They show a facsimile of a plate with 4 rivet holes to illustrate the point. But it's not shown in place, and the 5 fields for data are shown blank. I was hoping to find an actual picture for you, so you'd know what rivets were OEM, but that's all my documentations does for your vintage van.
