They would measure me even though I was typically legal height. They would check that none of my tires rubbed, crawl underneath checking things out, all sorts of B.S. They might as well been doing a state safety inspection all over again. Funny thing is, I had an early Dodge D50 once that was static drop with about 2" of clearance below the frame rails and was super illegal all around, but they didn't pull me over once in that one because it had a nice paint job.

I have a Sportster chop and goodness forbid you change the exhaust here or highway patrol will crawl all over you with a microscope. I have to get baffles if I change the pipes and even then I could still get popped. $1000 fine out the door, no longer a fix it ticket like it once was. Here's the kicker, no one will ship stock exhaust to CA to fix back to stock! My bike never had the originals to begin with. Ugh.

That totally SUX. Is CHP checking for a noise infraction, or is it C.A.R.B Nazi related. Is it in the Ca Vehicle Code Statute you cannot deviate from stock?. That's crazy. C.A.R.B. SUX

I'm running a 2 into 1 no baffle on my 96 Springer, louder than hell. No one ever bothers me. I've been running with no signals and no mirrors for years, never been bothered. I just put the mirror back on last year or the year before after I almost got rear ended at a light. I could never live in CA. Too many damn rules on everything under the sun.

Nice. Here is what I started with. A pretty stock (engine wise) 1989 Sportster.

I had someone helping me and they encouraged me to tear it down in their backyard and build it over the winter. As much as it made me uncomfortable, I started tearing it down. Once it was pretty much to bare frame, the dude stopped letting me come over to work on it, freaked out over perceived style similarities, held my bike hostage, and then left it in his front yard (after dropping my tins and scraping the fins on the engine).

Whatever.

I had no choice at that point and took it to a shop to be built as I have no storage or work space where I live. I'm actually very happy with that choice because not only did the bike get built, but it was built better than I could have in someone's backyard.

Those pipes though give me a bit of concern because Highway Patrol has a hard-on for ticket writing. I'll throw some baffles in and see what happens.

CA takes the fun out of most everything. It’s a big reason I don’t live there anymore. I can peacefully ride this here with no problems and enjoy the way Harley’s are meant to sound. 95 Sporty.

Love the evo springer Kursed. I’ve wanted one of those for awhile.

Charlie, my first sporty was an 89. Watch the alternator magnets, they are inside the clutch basket. You don’t want anything coming loose inside there.

I love how the 87-89 Sportys have a bunch of weird quirks to them. frown

Bike stuff goes here … not in what you did to your van. There's a place for everything here.
