Hey,

since I bought my 87 GMC G2500, I'm unable to use central locking.
I changed the remote control battery with a new one but it didn't help.
The remote control circuit looked ok at first when I had a look a few months ago (need to check again).
Do you have any idea of what could be wrong ?
Is there a central locking relay somewhere ?

Thanks!

Best wishes for 2020, health first cheers

I'm not even sure what "central locking" is. Do you mean the key fob lock, or the lock switch on the doors?

Hey Kursed,
by central locking, I meant the key fob lock.
Is there a way to determine if the key fob is dead/faulty or if it's the "receiving" part ?
I thought of trying to pair the key fob with the van again, but I don't even know how to do that.

Did 87 have a factory remote opening system? Could this be aftermarket add-on. I had a 1989 Blazer that still had to be opened with the key.

I'll sent a picture of the fob back home.

That's a good point.. I wondered too. 87 seems early to me, but that's my first van.

I think I'd need to dig a bit to find the locking system.
Maybe near the fuse box or in some other place : I read that conversion vans may have a 2nd fuse box...

What I've found on most of them that were inoperable, both factory and aftermarket, were they needed to be cleaned really well. Take the fob apart and use some isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip to clean the contact points on the main board. You can clean under the rubber contacts really well also. They usually get a bit of black goo on the contact point of the board which causes the contact to go wonky.

This guy on YouTube has a great tutorial on doing this.

Thanks for the suggestion Kursed.
I've begun cleaning the keyfob PCB with isopropyl alcohol this morning but the button contacts are done by components soldered on the board.
So maybe those are dead, because after cleaning I tried the fob and it didn't work.
I'll try desoldering them and/or shortcircuit to test further.
In the meantime, here is the picture of the keyfob itself (I didn't have time to take a picture of main board)
Inside the shell, there a small label, not sure if it's a date...

If 12-4-96 is the date, that would lead me to think this is an aftermarket system. Also, I have 3 newer Chevy's 1999 and up, and all my key fobs have the GM logo stamped in the backside of the case. GM stamps most of their products so you know that they are factory OEM.

Yeah, no GM stamp on the back, only the GM sticker on the buttons side.
I tested the 2 switches with a continuity tester and they work. So the problem is somewhere else.
I had a look with a magnifier and I'm wondering if some SMD is not missing.
Will take a picture to show and have your thoughts.
