| | | Anyone removed a fiberglass topper??? | Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 25 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Jul 2010 Posts: 25 | First off i apologize if this is posted in the wrong category and if its been talked about before...
I have found a mint shorty Dodge Ram van (1999) Extremely low Ks windowless V8 just exactly what iam looking for. Only problem is it has the ugly conversion type fiberglass roof topper. So...with that said if i remove the ugly high topper is there any place that makes flat roof style ones or has anyone done this and has a better idea ?. Or can a roof be put back on from a doner van? Any help or ideas are welcomed Happy holidays everyone !

OR learn to love the topper/find a topper that looks better to you. The roof skin and structure is all gone, it'll never be the same trying to undo all of that. Plus its a late model Ram van, not a tradesman. There are others out there that will fit your requirements.

I wanted to do this on my ford when I had it. its going to take a lot of welding, but it can possibly be done with panel adhesive now with the amazing adhesives that are out there.
A lot of people will ask why you don't get another van. That was the common response I got when I talked about it. They couldn't understand that I really liked my van aside from the topper, and another van just wouldn't be the same. I can understand people not wanting a good unmolested van to be hacked up, but I don't understand why they would get so touchy about removing a fiberglass top and putting a factory roof back on.
I would find a donor van in a scrapyard and take the whole roof from below the drip rails. this way you have enough material to do the job and all the supports and everything. once you have a donor roof, you could pull the topper off and see what your actually working with. I know a lot of the conversion companies will leave the factory roof above the drivers area back to the first roof support and then the rear section to the first support forward, and then cut everything in between out. there have to be a zillion dodge work vans in the scrap yards with roofs that are in decent shape. | | |
