I guess you can say I'm a vanner deep at heart. My folks bought an 83 Chevy G20 conversion new when I was 7 years old and we had it until 1994. A many a great moments, memories, education, and even a bit of hot rodding knowledge (LE9 305) came from within. It was truly a one of a kind rig (as many were from that era) having been customized by a local shop Klein's of Baltimore, MD then sent to the dealer. This was the era before MARK III and Sherrod became mainstream. Having said that, back in '83 dealers of the "big 3" had loads of customizers on the lots. Every single one was different. No two were the same. Graphics, colors, interior layouts, seats, carpets, materials, YOU NAME IT all had character of their own. We towed a 28' tandem axle camper with it every year to Pocomoke, MD the Friday after Thanksgiving for Whitetail rifle season. The camper was built in 1970 and was heavy as hell. My father built a sheetmetal fairing for the roof to help with the heavy late November crosswinds on Maryland's eastern Shore. One of my father's good friends in the club also had a good size camper so they parked about 15 feet apart and enclosed the area between the two with lumber frame, tarp, plastic sheeting and pallet floor with kerosene heater in the center to make a large community room for everyone. Party time! My father and I used to be very tight. In 1995 he and my mother had divorced and he took off with his 1st girlfriend from his youth. He walked out of my life to appease her which was devastating. Especially considering I did nothing wrong. Even still, I'm very proud of him, a fearless Vietnam Veteran. I'd have walked with him through the gates of hell without fear and miss him tremendously. He passed away in February this year. I got to see him one last time 4 days before he passed from cancer linked to agent orange. I have many great memories in which this van was a part of. In fact, there isn't a day that goes by that the van doesn't cross my mind. So, with that said, it's not out of the question that I'm considering looking out for another '83-'84 Chevy G20 conversion or cargo to make my own if the opportunity arose. Either way, I'm excited to join the vanning community and respect all the unique character. Cars have always been my thing. However,, The craft put into many of these vehicles to personalize is diverse & mind blowing. (how many ways can you do a nova, mustang etc) Or in some cases these days, even live off the grid! Oh, and one more thing.. I lurked on many threads & realized one thing.. There's a real neat group here. Have not seen a bunch of poo throwing here, which is very much a welcome change. Look forward to learning a lot and helping others out as best I can. | | | Re: Hello Van Community | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 32,696 Likes: 172 Old Timer | Old Timer Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 32,696 Likes: 172 | to the site. Heck, I didn't even know GM welded their fenders on?!? Anymore, here in the Mid Atlantic the older vans are getting scarce as hens teeth. The lower portions of the body panels on most have returned to the earth. If it's not the salt then ~its the humidity and dewpoint working overtime~. 😕 Ford Econolines 75 to 91 are almost extinct on the roads. Kinda sad to see them disappear. They used to be EVERYWHERE. Which reminds me.. About 5 years ago walking through the local pic-a-part, I happened to come upon a '71 Econoline. It was a period correct custom. It was medium brown metallic with what appeared to be a gold (almost pearl) airbrushed fish scale pattern paint job with an incredible mural of a skull faced undertaker piloting a stage coach pulled by rotten zombie stallions. Anyway, I speculate it wasn't a barn or dusty garage forgotten rig, because rust was at a minimum.. Shag carpet to the max, weedburners, chain link steering wheel, and what looked to be a warmed over small block ford blessed with an original Edelbrock torker, vintage finned aluminum valve covers, and headers. Teardrop windows and crank vent in the roof. Guys, I just was floored at the van itself. It seemed more like a mid size van in comparison to the later offerings. The more I crawled around this rig the more I liked it! Very cool body style! But MAN are those vans scarce. Looking forward to a new chapter in my love for vehicles! | | | Re: Hello Van Community | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 559 | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 559 |
