Sorry to hear about your wife. She definitely comes before the van does. I hope she has a quick recovery.

Hi gang, Wife is on the mend, but having to make some lifestyle changes. Finally got started on the engine pull. Got to the point where I was going to pull the drive train as one unit. Got the engine hoist out, and soon discovered it had developed ED. I was pumping but t wasn't rising to the occasion. I ran to the parts store and got a quart of hydraulic jack oil, and I was back in business. Like Viagra for the hoist. Got everything lined up and quickly figured out I was going to have to separate the tranny and motor due to clearance issues. Something I've never run into before is past engine swaps, in trucks and cars. But this my first van swap. Lesson learned. Have the tranny half unbolted, then of course life throws curve balls and that's as far as I have gotten.

I have made some money back on my investment by selling the factory seats and the bumpers to young new first time vanner I met, named Ethan. Gave him a good deal, all for $60. Teens don't have much cash. I remember those days. He also has a 92 Dodge b250 long wheel base van. Encouraged him to join the club I am in...Central Texas Vanners. I also offered help with his van in return for helping me. Hope he follows through. I have some parts he needs and wants. Rather trade the shared work for the parts, make it a teaching moment for him, and build his enthusiasm in vanning. When I get the V6 and tranny our of my van, I am going to sell the 3 speed automatic with lock up torque converter tranny. The guy who rebuilt it says I should be able to get about $600 for it. Dan rebuilt it about 60k ago and it has run flawlessly since. The V6 is still running good, odometer just rolled over to 237,000 yesterday. Will try to sell the motor too, but it needs the intake manifold gasket redone, which I have. At that rate I could end up recouping my investment on the donor van, possibly more. Keeping tabs to see how it turns out.

I lucked out on timing for the needed parts for the 5.9 engine and AOD tranny. 30% off weekend last week for employees. I'm a commercial sales manager at Auto Zone. I usually get 20% off except for special order parts. Scored all I think I need and saved about $150. Just wish TIME was more on my side on this swap. Just gotta have patience... Ohmmmmm.

Have a van run in Austin this weekend. Wife says I can go, I've earned it. I'm stoked! So time to wash the Dodge, check everything for the trip and enjoy. Next weekend I'll be back to pulling the motor and begin the refurbishing for the swap. The hope is to have it done and the "new" drive train in before Christmas, and the chilly weather sets in. Well...that's the plan.... But we all know how that can change. More soon.

Had a blast at the van run. About 22 vans showed up. Made new friends, sold a few pieces from the donor van and some other parts I had, like an small wooden console with switches which goes perfectly with a club member's 78 Dodge custom. It still has original interior. Green and white 2 tone window van, with green vinyl old school diamond tufted walls, with green shag, a bed, 2 swivel chairs and a table. Sold a few plastic, still in the box 70's vintage interior lights. Still have over 2 dozen left, if any one interested. I can email pics.

Back on the engine pull today. My hoist cylinder blew a seal, and died a messy death. Went to Harbor Freight, got new cylinder. Got some eager help from neighbors teen who wants to learn about this stuff. Tranny out, with his help. The engine would be out already if I had the right size chains to work with. LOL, always something!!..Also ended up pulling the intake as the shop manual said to. Quick run to hardware store in morning for chain, and should have the engine out before lunch. The engine mounts held on with finger tight bolts, supported in the rear by a bottle jack. Once hooked up to the hoist, it's ready to pull. Get any last pieces, harnesses, lines and stuff out I need, then push the rolling shell out of the garage. Step one will be complete. Next step will be cleaning, gaskets, and painting to be ready to swap the motors.

Glad to have the engine hoist working, and thought I was ready to pull the block. I had to make 2 trips to the hardware store. One for chain, since the links on mine were too small and my bolts wouldn't fit through. Then back again for some washers so the bolts wouldn't pull through the chain and also have enough to create a spacer for the engine stand, where it meets the block. Reread the shop manual real quick and discovered I had forgotten a step. I need to pull the intake off for clearance. Well, now I need new intake gaskets added to the parts list. Pulling it made all the difference. Plenty of clearance. The plus side was it revealed that the inside of motor was rather clean except for oil staining. So it was obvious that the previous owners did the regular maintenance. Made me feel more lucky about what I got. Did compression check, and all cylinders at 147 to 155. Within specs according to the manual. So the engine is on a stand, the tranny laying next to it. All fluids from both look like they were changed at good intervals. Even the anti freeze that covered my garage floor when I tipped the motor to clear the engine bay, was clean, and no rust. , (And here I thought I got it all out). Got all the lines, wiring, shift linkages, and hoses that will will need for the swap, out on a nice pile on the garage floor. Still have one last component to yank...The Y pipe with the catalytic converter that has the smog pump tube attached. Still can't get the flare fitting for the tube off the cat. Muffler is shot, Time to break out the Sawzall.. Wish I could eliminate the smog pump altogether. Then I can borrow the neighbors to help push the rolling shell out. One of my van buds in the CTV club claims he knows a guy with headers for my swap, and will sell them "stupid cheap". Still waiting to hear.

Now researching a couple things. Maybe someone can help me out?? In 93 or 94, Dodge went to the serpentine setup on the 5.9 Magnum. The one I pulled still runs the V belts. Trying to figure out if the block remained the same, and the Bracket was the changes. If so, I hoping I can use my new AC compressor, alternator, belt, tensioner and power steering pump.

The drive shaft I figured out would be the larger diameter one from the donor van, just get it resized. Or maybe I would still get lucky, make a Pick N Pull run to see if I can get one from a V8 shorty van. Still trying to do all this on a small budget, doing well so far. Already made $100 from selling parts I don't need. Then when i sell the tranny from the V6, I will recoup some more and have money for later work.

Have the under hood wiring harness all out with the PCM. Just need to pull the shop manual out, check wiring diagrams to see if what goes from the firewall connector into the dash remains the same. I pray it does.

Been doing research on my 360 engine. Looking up parts change overs like brackets and such. Turns out I got the 360 LA, NOT the 5.9 Magnum engine as I originally thought. According the numerous sources I have read thus far, 1993 was the first year of the 5.9 Magnum engine with the block changes, roller cam and other upgrades. 1992 was the first year of the 5.2 or 318 Magnum. Still gonna swap this 360 into my 92 shorty. Just changes a few details about the final project I had in mind. By the way, my current 3.9 V6 just rolled over to 238,000 miles on my way home from work last night !! The original 42RH...3 speed lock up torque converter tranny was rebuilt about 60,000 miles ago. Plan to sell it. The guy who rebuilt it said I could easily get $700 for it. It was the tarnny for the Ram vans, Dakotas, Durango, and Ram 1500 based short wheel base truck. So hopefully plenty of potential buyers. That would hopefully give me back my body work and paint budget, since I spent that money on the donor van for the V8 swap. Hmmm, that would mean in the end, I would break even on this investment...cool! A nearly no cost swap in the end.

Hey there mlarky,

We may need to talk. When I back out and engage Drive, and nothing happens... shocked

I saw this and am thinking I may be interested. I have an '88 B250, with a 5.2TBI, and a 42RH/A500 OD automatic, which is a 4 speed with lockup. Do you have an A500/42RH? Or do you have a 3 speed, no OD?, which would mebe be the A999?
