Just picked up a 72 Dodge B200 and there are four hoses coming off of the gas tank going into a "tube' and from I can figure it it is part of the "evaporation control" system. Is this necessary/required? Can I bypass or disconnect it?

Are you referring to the black plastic canister underneath the passenger side of the van, about the size of a coffee can. That is the evap charcoal canister that recirculates gas vapors from the carb. My 76 has a hose coming from the tank into the canister and a hose from the carb connected to it.

The 1972 evaporative emission control was a one year only engineering miscarriage. The hose at each corner, in theory, allowed the gasoline fumes to be captured no matter what angle the van was parked at. In practice it was an overly complicated nuisance. These days parts are hard to find, so you are better served switching the system to a later style system with a single hose and a charcoal canister.

There are 4 tubes coming from the fuel tank that go into a metal tube about 2” in diameter inside the body of the van behind the passenger rear wheel. Should I choose to replace tank and sending unit I am not sure I can even find a replacement

On the old B series van website there was a discussion about this system and how to convert it to a modern charcoal canister. I believe you can cap the fittings on the corners and go with a sending unit that uses a modern charcoal canister.

Lee, I just replaced the charcoal canister on my 76. I did some research on youtube and the mopar forums reading about repairs to the systems. There was a picture on one of them of the setup you have behind the spare tire. Some folks say to just eliminate them, others say to keep the evap system. Put a search in google or youtube for dodge charcoal canister or dodge or mopar evap system, lots of reading.

This is the "tube" that was behind the paneling that the four tubes coming out of gas tank go into.

Wow, thanks for posting that picture Lee, that's the first live one I've ever seen! I've got an ancient B100 shorty FSM which details it in a hose routing diagram, but I had no idea how huge it was in real life.

If it isn't causing identifiable problems I'd not prioritize converting it over other items which probably deserve far more immediate attention. The vehicle was designed for and did run with it after all. But, a more modern charcoal canister system would contain the fumes and free up that space in your cabin, and be more compatible with currently available fuel tanks.
