Hello Vanners,

I'm seeking some experienced advice before refreshing my tired suspension on a 1990 G30 GMC 5.7. The engine is new, the diff rebuild, time for improved suspensions and steering.

The goal is a reliable OEM ride. Maintenance was neglected by previous owners so any good advice is appreciated.

Right now the steering is very sloppy, apparently legal and the chassis bounces after every road bump. So far, I've replaced the bump stops and sway bar bushings, which were all cracked.
Now I'm sourcing shocks and front springs. If there is a magic recipe for these van's ?

A few questions, I found

Front shocks : part: 88945302 $41.86/shock - seems inexpensive is it worth going to a Bilstein for $123.79/shock?

Front coil $90.56/side (www.parts.com)

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/gmc,1990,g2500,5.7l+350cid+v8,1151761,suspension,shock+absorber,7556

Bilstein also falls under "heavy duty" compared to "original ride quality" is this a harsh ride designed for larger engines?

Also I have zero experience with leaf springs, no idea if they need replacing or not.
Happy to listen, or be directed to older build threads or sites.

Thanks in advance.

My van has 150,000 miles

Welcome to the site ...

I love Bilstiens but then again I have 454's in my G30's. They make softer Bilstiens, best to call N talk to an engineer there. https://www.bilstein.com/us/en/

For the steering 1st thing id do is the idler arm, tie rods rubber grommets, next is the steering stabilizer and if you need a steering gear box Id go redhead ... https://redheadsteeringgears.com/product/1983-1996-gmcchevy-vans/

Sweet appreciate the response.

A little back story the Van has seen some winters and the gear box bolts recently rusted out and broke, disconnecting from the chassis. I had new bolts put and because it still works well, my friend driving was not overly impressed.

The steering stabilizer: Is that an aftermarket part? sitting above the cross member.

Yes they are Monroe stabilizers. . . http://www.monroe.com/en-US/products/steering-stabilizers/monroe-magnum-steering-stabilizers/

I check out the beam that the steering box bolts to N maybe reinforce it.

I too will say Blistiens are one of the best shocks on the market (in my own opinion), pricey, but very good!!

Frske1,
I have been wanting to do what you did!!! thank you for posting your pics.

Mine and your def of sloppy may be a little different, but I will certainly check the king pins. I was going to turn the "gear box nut" a little (1/8" or so) to see if that didn't tighten up the steering, but I have heard that also wears out the gear box faster too.

Thank you. Will check this weekend.

Bob
