I will soak it for a while before attempting to do any changes. Since I am a 3rd cousin, on my fathers side to Murphy's Law, I have a feeling there will be some rust!

Could a guy double nut using a lock nut, it if the tabs do break?

All the advice and insight and pics are much appreciated.

Yep a double nut would work if the tabs break.

If you don't have the threads to fit a double nut and the tabs are broken either replace the special tabbed washer or if that can't be got try a Nylok nut.

While you have the panel off, I would recommend lubricating all the window mechanisms and locks, and also some form of undercoating. I use chain saw bar oil on all my vehicles for undercoating.

What lube are you using on the "window tracks / motors / locks"

White lithium grease?

Yes, lithium or all-purpose grease on the window tracks. I use a lock spray on the door locks. You don't need much on the locks, I usually spray them on the inside of the door to lubricate and wipe off the excess. Also, check to make sure the door weep-holes are not plugged with debris to let the water drain out.
