Of the 460/C6 combo He'd say, It's heavy, thirsty, heavy duty, powerful, and dependable. And heavy. Fuel injection improves stock power slightly. In 1972, and earlier, Pre smog, high compression, these motors were rated 365HP/485 torque! I don't recall seeing that powertrain in an E van in person, mostly class C MH. but the BB was available. Biggest gasoline Ford power available during those years. Last generation of the 385 series BB 460. Replaced by the V10. | | | Re: 460? | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 9,855 Likes: 234 carpal tunnel | carpal tunnel Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 9,855 Likes: 234 | | | | Re: 460? | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 559 | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 559 | Yep the 460 is a

The 460 Ford is tough as nails, a torque monster in stock form and they can be easily enhanced to do even more. The C6 is cut from the same cloth and is a good heavy duty transmission. While it will pull the corner stone out of a brick s--thouse it will consume copious amounts of fuel doing so. If you need to tow heavy for short distances they would be hard to beat from an initial cost point of view. Oh .... if you've ever heard one with open headers they sound like the boogie man!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ct67gS9J9XkA real favorite around Ga/Fla in mud trucks .......

Note the return to simplicity of what works in a working truck. Ford has also kept the NA 5.0 V8 available in the truck line alongside the Turbo engines. Big Block Econolines live on! If I was putting together a motor for my 89 Ford, I would get a mid 90s 351W roller cam block, a set of gt40 or GT40P heads, the factory 351W truck intake, and an aftermaket torque cam compatible with the computer controlled fuel injection and ignition. I would mate that to an AOD and run 3.9 rear axle gears. That drivetrain will give you plenty of power and fun and still get decent economy on the highway.
