1991 Windows in van

I have a question to see if anyone has done this or knows.

I have a 1991 G20 Chevy conversion van with "FIXED" side and back windows.

I have recently purchased the window gaskets, and "HINGE" out windows side and back. From another Chevy G20 van.

My question really goes that the window is screwed into the door with 3 or 4 screws at the top (depends upon the window size). Then the hinge is screwed into the lower part of the window sil of the van door.

Have anyone converted fixed windows to hinge out windows? My biggest concern is messing up a perfect door by drilling into it to do hinge windows. I don't think the van has the holes drilled into the upper part of the door and that is the biggest obstacle in this project.

Any input or thoughts would be appreciated.

I know now, I should have made a template of the doors when I took the windows out of the van to assist in this project.... Oh well, lesson learned.

This is a pretty popular mod, although I'm not exactly sure of the procedure. My van has the pop out rear windows and they make a big difference in summer!

Thanks for the replies!

"Ya can't mess it up"

Um, I use to work with a person that would prove that saying wrong each and every time. Flushing the toilet would overflow for him!!

It is an easy install but I suggest you remove the existing windows and gaskets carefully just in case you have to re-install. The upper hinge is adjustable so it is kinda hard to mess things up. The inner door has a flat area to mount the latch. Start by removing just one existing window and you will see.

When I removed the "pop out windows" from the donor van, there seemed to be a dried up yellow film where the old gasket sealed around the window.

When installing the "pop out windows" into my van, is there a sealant that I should use around the metal before installing the gasket for the window?

I forget the exact name but I used some kind of non-setting urethane. It doesn't take much sealant.

Check out CR Laurence products. Make sure you purchase the appropriate cleaner cuz the sealant is very messy.

This is a pretty easy mod. Do one window at a time, as you may learn something and get better over time. It would be easier with a second person to help hold stuff, although I did it alone. Save your old window and weather stripping, it's valuable and you or a friend may need it later.

1) Carefully remove the hinged window from the donor van and save the screws

1B) Carefully remove the weather stripping from the donor van

2) Remove the fixed window from your van

3) Measure and mark where the holes go for the hinged window

4) Pre-drill 1/8" holes

5) Install weatherstripping

6) Install screws in widow hinge

7) Install screws in latch

8) Repeat until you've finished the project.

9) Enjoy your upgraded van!
