The swap itself is pretty straight forward but you'll need to think holistically about it. i.e. - 350ci engine is just the start of it. That has a ton of variables to price that accurately but lets say you do a basic rebuilt 350. Thats roughly 1500 for a rebuilt long block. You're gonna need intake/carb, exhaust headers and full exhaust, ignition and all of the engine mounted accessories. Best bet is to pull a complete motor so all the parts are there or you can nickel and dime yourself to death. But also think you'll probably need to change cooling system. Motor mounts...etc. It can become a huge list. Check out the recent LS swap that was posted here. "LS Swap it" is easy to say but its a much longer list.

How much do you have to do the changes? How much do you plan to drive the van? All those answers can help direct you how to best spend your money. Good thing about 350's is they are a dime a dozen. You can find a good running 350 for cheap and source all the other stuff you need but if you're really planning on driving this a lot, its not a bad idea to invest in some decent parts and have swap that's worth all the time in the end.

Good info DeathorVictory!

It will be my weekend warrior vehicle; however; I want to be able to drive
from coast to coast with no worries. I want a solid strong motor; that
sounds mean yet be 100% dependable on long journeys.

What is your take on getting a crate motor vs a strong solid running 350 and build it with good parts,
I'm not Richie $$ Rich; however I want a good quality strong motor that I can have faith in on any runs
if I decide to go on a run back East or ??

Any idea on costs; I know it varies. I wish I could do the work myself; however current circumstances
make it far too challenging.

I want to invest my hard earned money wisely on good product and good install labor.

You can pull a junkyard 4 bolt main complete motor for probably 300-400? Best to try and go when there are sales! If you paid someone at a shop to rebuild it, you’re looking at 1500-2000 for a complete rebuild which may or may not include the core exchange. These are estimates based on things I’ve seen, but may vary where you are and this is just a loose baseline. But by pulling a complete motor, you’ll get brackets, belt pulleys, etc and that’s worth a lot of peace of mind. GM crate engines are $2k for a long block (which has gone up in the last few years) and that’s all you get. But you do get a warranty which is nice. If your drivetrain is solid along with your cooling and brakes, there’s no reason you can’t drive that thing for all the reasons you want it for. Nice part about building a motor is that you can change a few things for simple bolt on hardware that you’d have to buy anyways (cam, valve springs, timing chain, etc). Radiator is a few hundred bucks, exhaust can run 300-400, and no matter what way you go, there will still be a long list of littles. Fluids, gaskets, tools, back to the parts store for something else countless more times.

Both ways are good but have their limitations. You can take a risk on a used engine too, if you have a reputable seller or can hear it run first. 350s are really stout engines so many exist in used form from old projects. But it won’t be “just drop it in as is and go”, there will always be stuff to fix and upgrade.
