I was going to use my van this whole summer then start some serious work on it afterwards but I greenlighted that plan alot sooner than expected. Over the week of 4th of July I went camping in the woods and during that time something crawled into my vents and died...smells absolutely rancid.

Here's a cool pic of my van on the 4th

I also realized my seats make great camping couches!

Anyway while that body is drying out I've been working on my Gull Wing. Got some hinges I really like, here's trying them out

I've ran into a road stop though, I can't get the outside slider handle off. According to the repair manual, once you take the inside handle screw off and the inside handle, the outside handle should pull out with the shaft. That is not the case though, this thang is stuck in there like a barbed hook on velcrow. I've hit it with the hammer and pried on it...

I think the shaft may just be rusted in? I'm currently letting rust remover do it's magic then going to pry and beat it again. Am I on the right track or is there maybe a pin or screw I'm missing?

Do you need to take the door handle off? Also with the hinge, you’ll just need to make sure it swings around the drip rail when it opens and closes. It seems from the mock up that it could conflict. Also you’ll need some pretty strong hydraulic struts to support the steel door and work on where to position those on the door frame.

Yes I have to have the door handle off because I'm replacing the latching mechanism and the mechanism won't come out till I'll pull the outside handle off.

You got me doubting myself for a minute haha so I remeasured everything, it seems like the hinges should work! I actually did another mockup to show you, but I don't have enough hands to take a video of me swinging it, so here's a few pictures!

Here's the new mockup

So it sits down from the drip rail a half inch

And it barely makes it, like God planned it or some shii

I'm really glad you asked this question, because there was a few things I didn't take into account including the drip rail. Lucky for me there is a half in. between the top of my door and the drip rail that was really my saving grace or it wouldn't have worked like I planned

Also you are totally right about the weight, I have a welder friend who is going to help me make some custom spots to secure my hinges and struts.

As for the struts themselves, I was starting out with these ones I picked up from the scrapyard

I'm already thinking I may need some a little more heavy duty and longer

Here is a video of the mockup in place.

It's so close I'm still worried about it interfering with the swing, but if it comes down to it I will bend or grind the drip rail
