A few guys have told me they unhooked them and plugged the hose on their 70s Mopar muscle cars. I get a gas fume smell at times and have read that the charcoal in the canister is full. A couple times when I have filled the van completely full with gas, the gas has dripped out the canister. I read where the charcoal can actually break down into small pieces and get sucked up into the carburetor. | | | Re: Charcoal Vapor Canister | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | The purpose of the charcoal cannister is to absorb and store fuel vapors that evaporate out of the float bowl on the carb. There is really no benefit or point to disconnecting it. It is actually very beneficial. There is a filter on the botom that can be changed or you can replace the old one with a new unit.
It sounds like yours has degraded and you need a new one. They can be hard to find, but I know they are out there.

I checked the part numbers and it shows the new number is the superceded number. Have to find some time and drop the old one from underneath and compare them. | | | Re: Charcoal Vapor Canister | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,463 Likes: 12 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,463 Likes: 12 | You'll want to take a vacuum pump and verify the plumbing of that canister. Some of the substitute canisters aren't direct replacements, but require work, such as drilling out plugs or identifying the correct port amongst several. The filter is often non existent, with later canisters having gone to a sealed system.

When I took the side off to change the filter, charcoal started pouring out. I have the new canister that supercedes the old part number but the ports are different locations than the old one, so not sure which hose goes where. | | | Re: Charcoal Vapor Canister | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | Hook them up by function. The ports on the canister should be labelled- carb, tank vent, some such.
Where did you find a new canister? I need a couple for my vehicles.

The old canister is stamped carb, vent, etc, the new one isn't. For replacement canisters, punch in the part numbers in an internet search, quite a few out there, but some are very expensive. | | | Re: Charcoal Vapor Canister | Joined: Feb 2018 Posts: 49 newbie | newbie Joined: Feb 2018 Posts: 49 | Ditto meanmachine !
In the california models late 1970s some have 2 cannisters. The filter element on the bottom breaks down and charcoal runs out. I got one from Turners wrecking in Fresno Ca. (lots of older dodge vans). The one he sent me did not fit, bought NOS from Brads NOS (you can find him with a quick search). I do not remember what I did with the non fit. will look around and see if I saved it.

I might do that.
