Was on a road trip last weekend and this somehow popped into my mind. Pretty simple, what was your van used for before you bought it? The previous owner of mine used it as a local runaround vehicle for hauling junk and also went camping in it. I'm not sure of what happened before then but I think there is a chance it could have been used by a local band to haul equipment around. I think that since it has an old faded sticker on the rear window for a small band with about 100 Facebook likes. That would explain why it had so few miles on it if it was only driven to gigs around the area. Probably a stretch but it's all i could find on it haha.

Not sure if theres another thread with the same idea going for it but I didn't see one so hopefully I didn't miss it..

My van was a road trip vehicle and 23 foot trailer hauler. Explains why the rear suspension, engine, and transmission were worn out at only 150,000 miles.

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!

My uncle bought mine new in late 78. He used it to haul his stock car around the racing circuit in So Cal. He also would put his Dirt Bikes inside and had a mount system designed for this, that disappeared sometime...

My parents bought the van from him in the mid 80s and it became our family traveler, replacing a late 70's silver conversion my mom had and a rotted out mid 70's shorty my dad had. We would travel between Michigan and Southern California several times, and I think we traveled to Florida in it once. I started Racing BMX in the 90's and we would use it to get to BMX races around Michigan and nearby states. I joined the Marine Corps in 96 and the van was basically retired from use once I was out of the house. It sat in the driveway (with active registration and insurance) as a storage shed for almost 20 years until my parents finally gave it to me. During this time, it was still started regularly and moved indoors for the Michigan winters.

My Dad ordered the Express new. Used my (then) GM employee discount on the chassis. Sat down with the president of Midwest Conversions, and specified just what he wanted. They traded with Starcraft to get the chassis he wanted, then did the conversion he had asked for. Dad loved that van, keeping it even after he could no longer drive. It was built for towing a 29' travel trailer. But after not too many years, they traded up to a motorhome, and the van was just used for recreational driving. Sat in the garage most of the time.

My plan was for it was to be a toy and tow vehicle for vacations/trips. Unfortunately I've ended up using it a lot more than I wanted to. Enjoyable miles, but I need to get it parked inside and start preserving it, or there won't be anything left!

My '93 4X was used by the Cuban Diplomats in Miami, then the Nevada State Maintenance Sys was out looking for oil in Elco Nev, then the Utah Olympics used it to haul skiers up the hill ..... then I got it in 2003 in a govt auction.

My white one has many (5) owners till I got it in Cedar Rapids in 09.

My ‘79 was also used for this and it’s fairly worn out at 130k.

My ‘87 was originally owned by an older gentleman who used it to go windsurfing. Then it was sold to a guy who ran a plant nursery and transported plants to other local nurseries. He took it on some trips as well but he maybe put 5-10k on it in 3 years. It’s only got 77k and is in much better shape!

I scored my van from the deepest part of Miami.
Im not really good with my Spanish, and had to use Spanglish to seal the deal. Im pretty sure my van was used for a multiple of tasks, including electrical contracting and plumbing.
I am still sifting through the evidence to support this. (leftover parts and pieces in a toolbox.)
The transmission was replaced somewhere along the line according the the PO, and Im sure it contained valuable tools as there are those locks on every door door to support a master lock.
As long as it has almost no windows and runs good it meets my vision of a real van.
I wonder what it has been through and what I will put it through.
It has already paid for itself with the amount of work it has done
great thread.

Race car hauler. Local dirt track racer used it to haul his "mini modified" class Pinto in the 90's. I believe the owner before that just used it lightly as a cargo hauler. I'm trying to get some pictures of when it hauled the race car.
