I want to surprise my oldest son with a cool van upgrade when he comes back from vacation. (I bet he is a member her, but hoping he doesn't have time to check forums while in Europe. I don't want to ruin the surprise!)

He bought a CB for his 70s Dodge Tradesman van. He is 21 and that van is his baby. I would like to install it, along with a PA speaker hidden behind the bumper. (Does not look to be room behind the grill). I need an antenna, and I am guessing a ball mount, and a PA speaker.

I looked at a couple threads in here, but got a bit confused on the install. I will likely leave that to my husband since he knows car stereos and I know engines. smile

Can anyone give me a recommendation on an antenna that is not 26 feet long but still works? smile And where is the "classic" vanning-look for mount location? And finally, any recommendation on what speaker to purchase that will fit in behind the bumper? (unless you know of a better place to hide it.)

Thank you so much. I normally do all my own investigation on my car mods, but I know nothing about vans and I thought I would ask experts rather than wasting time / buying the wrong thing.

Thank you! I think I have done enough digging to order parts. I found a site called rightchannelradio and they have been helpful at pointing me in the right direction!

Cool site VanMom. Glad they were able to help.

Are you going with a magnetic base antenna, or something that mounts permanently to the body (requiring holes in the body)?

I'm kind of liking this twin setup...got me thinking.

Firestick Dual

You are a bad influence! lol

Sorry I saw this thread a little late, but here's another potential option for antenna mounting if you don't want to put a hole in the exterior bodywork:

I mounted my 3' antenna using a mirror clamp style mount but I attached it to the spare tire carrier, then ran the cable down the carrier, through the lower door hinge, and then underneath where it comes up through the floor in a grommet to inside the van. Might not be the best option for you, but just another idea...

Personally, on my Chevy I run a mag mount Wilson 5000 Whip antenna that I can center in the roof. I like the mag mount because I can pull it of for pulling in the garage or low clearance areas.

For the 'Traditional' vanner look, folks like the ball mount on the side of the body in the rear with a long enough whip that they can bend forward to tie off on a drip rail or something. Then when they need it, they let it up and have plenty of exposed antenna over the body. The Main Downside is the hole in the body....

Dual antenna look cool, but their purpose is for when mounted lower and the van body blocks reception (like on a rear bumper or mirrors). if you have a decent amount of exposed antenna over the body, duals are a waste. If you want to mount on the sides without a lot of antenna sticking over the roof, duals are a good idea. However, I have a single firestick style antenna mounted on my drivers mirror of my Econoline and the wind noise drives me crazy!!!
