I like your steps. You are a good son.
You know, if your van has a V6 (not a slant) or a 318 or 360, it would be worth it to skip the 904 and go straight to the A500 overdrive automatic. Not much more work and you can keep the overdrive. If you do have a slant, you can still install an overdrive transmission if you hunt down one of the factory Chrysler adapter plates used in the 60s to mate the slant to the smallblock 727.

Its cool you take your mom for a ride in it for some smiles, and sorry to hear about your dad. Just a quick idea but in the meantime before a trans swap you could try taking off the clutch return spring and make the clutch a little softer. I bought my van without it, put one and and could see why the last owner took it off. I'm a young guy in a bit above average shape and that clutch was so damn stiff I was starting to get some knee pain. Took the spring off and wham, no knee problems and no clutch problems in 15,000 miles. I like rowing my own gears so I'd like to keep it. And throw out bearings a lot cheaper than knees so I think I'll just leave it off in the future. Like I said though the bearing hasn't made any noises in 15k miles without the spring. | | | Re: dads van...finally a few major changes...pics | Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 145 Likes: 8 member | OP member Joined: Sep 2016 Posts: 145 Likes: 8 | Really nice van/ Looks awesome with the white flares. Yup the pressure plate is what engages the clutch, so when you let up on the clutch peddle the spring just pulls the throw out bearing off the fingers on the pressure plate. I think the centrifugal force from the clutch plate spinning moves it off anyway. | | | Re: dads van...finally a few major changes...pics | Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,266 Likes: 43 old hand | old hand Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,266 Likes: 43 |
