Anybody ever use one of these markers to paint the faded white lettering on your tires. Also, any recommendation on a brand to buy. Ebay sells quite a few different brands of them. I searched my local auto parts stores today and nobody sells them.
yes! this with a STIFF Brush (Brass Tire brush if needed!) will do wonders.
I tried to paint the black letters on my new tires white... I scrubbed them with a wire brush and westleys, then a wire brush with blue dawn prior to painting the letters with an oil based paint marker. I let them dry for a few days. Man, it looked awesome....until the first time I cleaned them...paint started coming off immediately.
These tires are only 2 years old, and I can't get the black off of the white letters, no matter how many times I have tried. I started a thread a couple years ago about cleaning them. I have tried Westely's, Simple Green, Super-Clean, Comet, and several other cleaners, all scrubbing with a stiff bristle brush. It seems like the oil just keeps bleeding to the top of the white lettering. I bought 4 Cooper Cobra's at the time, two of the tires the lettering is nice and white, the other two just won't clean up. I remember guys using the white paint and markers in the 1970s and 80s on their muscle cars and never heard much good about the products. I thought with today's technologies, they may have made something better that would stick or stay on.
I did some searching and found out people are using Goo-Gone cleaner to clean the white letters. Tried some and it cleaned the letters up quite nice, will have to wait and see if they turn black again. A tire guy told me the tires are leaching oil into the white letters due to an ozone chemical protectant in the rubber to stop dry rot from the elements. That may be a bit true, as several times I have scrubbed them back to white, only to have them start getting black in a couple months. It seems nowadays more people are turning the white letters in and have the blackwalls out.
That's very interesting and makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing, that will be good info to keep stored in the old knowledge box for future reference.
guilty ... both vans have BFG white in ... still has the blue on the white but they are inside

Go to lowes and get a gallon of ZEP purple cleaner and a stiff nylon brush, you can get a spray bottle and dilute it 50% with water and it will clean anything.

I had a nasty, oily black spot on a few of my white letters that was being very stubborn no matter what I tried using but ended up wiping it right off using Goof Off Graffiti Remover.
Back in my minitruckin/lowrider days, I kept Wesley's Bleach White on hand in the truck kit for a quick whitewall clean. Used a bucket of hot water with a little Ajax scrub cleaner and a stiff bristle brush for the nastier jobs. I don't even know if they make either of those anymore it's been so long. Dangit, thanks for making me feel old.
My experience is if you use a brush you make tiny scratches that makes it harder and harder to keep 'em clean. I use tire cleaner and a old towel. Then a thin coat of 303... I'm not near as picky as I used to be. Nowadays I just need 'em to be round and get me where I want to be. Oh and yes Goof Off GR is great stuff for tires.
