More info on this interesting engine. Even factory stock GM took a big step with this motor.
The 496/8.1 was available from 2001 to 2009. Discontinued, Dagnabbit!

What's that Lassie? An 8.1L G Van swap? . Good Girl!

Kinda puts L18 equipped Chevy Express, and the GMC Savana Vans in a whole new light. as well! shift

That was a fun article to read! Also crazy to look at some of those prototype engines the big 3 were all working on in the 60's that don't seem to me like they are a ton different than modern V8's that are so much more efficient. Mostly because of fuel injection. The basic tech hasn't changed, it's mainly in my viewpoint the ability to manufacture it a a relatively affordable price point.
That said, I will keep the trustly old 318 in my van until it rusts apart or blows up. However if my 2008 Chevy work truck with the 4.8LS (300HP stock) met a tragic end, you can bet your ass I'll be looking for an old Chevy van to shove it into. :-)

1991 Dodge B250 Zephyr Conversion. "Bi-frost" 74,000-ish original miles and counting.
- 318TBI; has headwork and other bolt on upgrades. Runs strong and smooth!
- Powertrax locker
- Rear air springs, rebuilt suspension, steering stabilizer.

A very fun look back. Love 'em or hate 'em, electronics have a made a HUGE difference. Digital EFI and ignition with variable valve or cam timing make a big difference.

But yes, deep skirt block with cross bolted mains, overhead cams, alloy materials...all been with us for a long time.

The ability, using computer models, to study flow dynamics, stresses, and test designs before the first bit of metal is poured has helped too.

Transmissions being completely rethought to package 6, 8 and 10 forward gears where 3 used to live. Think back to when you had a 1 speed bike Vs a 10 speed. The mechanical advantage these engines have today is ridiculous.

The list goes on....

Gentlemen, thank you. Gotta have a V8!

GM has developed a new 4.3 V6 to replace the 4.8. eek And a new 6.6 to replace the 6.0! grin

The Vortec family of V8's is another golden generation, new and improved, of plentiful V8's for us to play with, much like we have enjoyed from Chevrolet, over the last 50+ years.

My buddy used to have a 71 Chevy Van with either a 409 or 427 in it. We used to leave the bar and he would get on it and the front-end would lift about 6" off the ground. Was always a good spectator sport, the whole bar would come out on the street to see it and the headers sounded like an airplane leaving the runway. He was always getting the front-end aligned, the wheelies would knock the shims out. The good old days.
