Picked up a 1996 Dodge B1500 wagon for a grand, and noticed it seems to have really loose steering. I spend the whole time driving it chasing it all over my lane. I looked at the tie rods, and they've all been replaced recently by the P.O. The issue seems to be steering box maybe? Or column? Is there a typical issue that I'm missing here? It's hard to spend a lot of time laying under it right now because there is still snow on the ground, so I get soaked to the core after just a couple moments under the van.
Really want to figure this out because the other issues it had I already fixed. Looking forward to driving this thing without looking like the most drunk sober guy on the road.

My 92 was looser than I preferred, a new one (reman) solved the problem. | | | Re: Steering is loosey goosey | Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 43 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 43 | Thanks. I'll have to yank it off and get one. Kinda figured I was gonna end up doing that. Looks like the core charge is more than the part itself.

Very annoying having all that slop which cannot be safely adjusted out.
just be aware the remans only have the seals done, and the wormdrive and ball inside could be quite sloppily worn.
it is pretty much a crap shoot and yo uwill not know until it is installed.
Redhead steering gears are $$$ but supposedly are remaned for minimal slop.
Would have made my most recent X country journey much more pleasant if I did not have to fight the wandering the whole time when there was no cross wind.
a 96 uses a U joint in the steering coupler, vs the ultra shoddily designed rag joint of thprevious years. I upgraded to a U joint at the same time I did the steering gear. so while it was way better, it was still annoying as all F to see the inpout gear shaft move so much before the outshaft responded. | | | Re: Steering is loosey goosey | Joined: Jan 2018 Posts: 72 journeyman | journeyman Joined: Jan 2018 Posts: 72 | Steer and Gear out of Columbus Ohio offers a quality rebuild service. From stock to a firmer feel box. Got one from a yard, to use, and took my original in for the rebuild, couple of weeks time. See above, Hard to find a good one from the parts stores!!! | | | Re: Steering is loosey goosey | Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 43 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 43 | Thanks Sparky.
