Hello, new here...

My Beauville has 80,000 miles and is in near perfect shape. I've been spending my time replacing the wear parts and I'm almost done. The last real issue that I have is the choke sticks...

Turn on van, choke on, normal. let it warm up, the flap doesn't open at all. I can flick it down but once I press the gas it's on again. What gives? I've checked and cleaned all the linkage and none of that is at fault. Is it the electric choke heater? Some sensor or gadget I do not know about?

I'm a novice when it comes to carbs, I'd like to not take the easy way out and go FiTech...

Help?

He there and Welcome to the Site. The last GM carbed vehicle I had was in 1982, Computer carbs IMO suck. Emissions forced alot of electronic vacuum computer crap onto carbs. My Parts Book covers 1986, but not my FSM. What motor? Symptoms?

It's got to be something either not sprung or linked correctly, causing/,and/or the choke not pulling the butterfly back.

Assuming the carb is undamaged at only 80K.
If the choke stays on it's still cold. Not the engine but the choke itself. Either the stove that should warm up or the electric heater (if so equipped?) isn't working or is disconnected. A lot (most actually) Q-jets had a vacuum operated pull-off that would open the choke slightly after it was running. There is a weight that closes the choke and that could be sticking but from what you describe it's just not feeling the heat. My2% .

1986 is a little late for me as most of my experience with Quadrajets is from the 60's and 70's.

The choke is electric, unplug it and hook a multi meter one to ground and the other one to the plug start the van and you should have 12+ volts at the plug if no voltage is found check the fuse, if you find 12+ volts hook 12 volts to the choke and see if it backs off, on my father in laws 86 it was a fuse.

I did check the voltage and fuse, both are good. I do think that the heater has failed. Because of where it is and the fact that it's riveted on I'll have to remove the carb to remove it and test it.

Save your self some time, you don't have to remove the carb or the heater to test it, if it's bad then remove the carb, just hook 12 volts to the choke heater and see if it opens give it a five + minutes, did you check the plug with the van running for 12 volts, make sure that the carb mounting bolts haven't loosened up and the carburetor has lost it's ground, is there any corrosion on the carb. Good luck

I pulled the carb and swapped out the heater. When I tested the old one it was faulty. The van runs perfectly now. While I had the carb out I replaced the filters, cleaned it up and got all new gaskets.

I love this van. Tomorrow I get the exhaust replaced, needs to be louder... smile

The picture I seen of your van it's a nice looking van, I'm glad you got it fixed, the hardest part is getting the doghouse off and on, what are you doing for exhaust.

Thank you. The van just has wear issues with the front end. Once i replace a few bits it will be in showroom condition.

The exhaust will be a highflow cat and probably a magnaflow muffler. All stock with how it's routed. When i get it done ill create a build page for it and post videos and pics of the van and our travels. If you have insta you can follow there at @theadventurouslifeofbeau.

/edit: The doghouse was the easy part. Diagnosing the issue took 5 days of searching on the internet. Glad I know more about carbs now though.
