The passenger side one was rattling around so much on one Baja trip it was driving me nuts, and I forget what i did to stop it making noise, but it stayed that way until i rebuilt my suspension, and there was no way i was returning that washer. | | | Re: idler arm washers | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 1,080 Likes: 1 old hand | OP old hand Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 1,080 Likes: 1 | LOL! Mine were solidly in place until I pressed out one of the rubber bushings a tad. They were so tightly in place that at first I thought they were actually the bottom of the complete bushing. It wasn't until I got one of the rubber sections pressed out a bit that I realized they were actually separate washers. By the way... check this adventure out! https://www.vanning.com/threads/ubb...tent-parts-manufacturing.html#Post741266 | | | Re: idler arm washers | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 1,080 Likes: 1 old hand | OP old hand Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 1,080 Likes: 1 | Ah success! One sleeve and one pivot bar out with serrated washers intact and preserved. Shew! I resorted to several different attempts including trying to cut a small groove in the sleeve to release the tension. But in the end the secret undoubtedly wound up being that although i had access to an air hammer. Apparently i was using an air chisel. Chalk one up for first time using this tool. Once i put the "hammer" part on it was a whole other world. Yeah! Now all that is left is the sleeve that contains the random for whatever reason planned extra sleeve. Woo hoo! | | | Re: idler arm washers | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 1,080 Likes: 1 old hand | OP old hand Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 1,080 Likes: 1 | So, although this thread diverted to a CA discussion I thought I would update on the USA made $60 AC Delco idler arms. They lasted TWO YEARS! Disappointing considering the ones that were $30 cheaper lasted 7 years.
Ah well.... the parts saga continues. | | | Re: idler arm washers | Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 9,855 Likes: 234 carpal tunnel | carpal tunnel Joined: Sep 2005 Posts: 9,855 Likes: 234 | Nicole, having an old van you love is like having a kid. Every time you go to town to get something you gotta get it something too. | | | Re: idler arm washers | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 558 | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 558 | What is it that is tearing them up ? Yesterday we took her to our friend to pull out and hold the refrigerant so that we could replace the reman AC compressor that had been making noise after only a couple of months. Our girl loves to visit Adam by the way. We got there and she wouldn't act up at all! Just like taking a kid to the doctor. And, every holiday we have to buy her something!
Frscke... I have no idea. We have been trying to figure that out. We just replaced the rotors because we tracked things backwards and discovered that the ones we put on four years ago have been eating bearings every 10,000 miles or so. Although it could have been the races we decided to just start fresh, new rotors, races and bearings. We will hit the road again soon and hope that everything will hold as expected this time. The only common denominator we could find was the rotor / bearing issue as the repeated problems. Prior to putting those rotors on parts were lasting as expected (first idler arms lasted well over 100,000 miles).
So, fingers crossed we did discover the actual causal factor. Either way, we've now got a combination model of the two types we have used.
We are off for a two day test run on everything before deciding that we are good to hit the road again.
