The steering feel in these vans isn't exactly.. um.. inspiring. Even in mine, Which I've replaced literally every bushing and replaceable part in the front end of mine with AC or Moog stuff. Up to and including the steering gear box which has been adjusted. The column u-joint is also nice and tight. It still drives like an old truck. It's just the way it is.

Now, I might be a little biased because all of my other cars are small sporty things in which the steering is nice and tight. But these van could take quite a bit of steering input to stay in your lane on the highway.. Anyways, a common thing that I've been seeing more of in "pro-touring" style cars is a rack and pinion swap. This eliminates a lot of linkage and "looseness" in the steering system and the muscle car guys seem to love it. After some reading, I am really thinking about swapping to rack and pinion.

I'm just curious if anyone has done this on a G van? I've searched around, but don't see much info at all. There are several pickups around and there are (very expensive) kits for them. I really don't think it would be that hard to use oem parts from some other vehicle, and then I would just have to fab up mounts for the rack. Just kind of throwing around ideas here, but...

-Does anyone have rack and pinion steering in a G van?
-What parts did you use?
-How much improvement was there?

-Or am I the first one to consider this? Overthinking things? Is it not worth bothering with?

The question has been asked (and debated) before but no one has ever went there.
The width of most OEM racks and the length of the tie rods needed look (to me) like a recipe for killer bump steer. I'm no engineer, and I'm talking into my hat here, so some research could prove me very wrong. Hopefully it does, you go ahead and do a great conversion with inexpensive OEM parts and post a hundred photos showing how easy it was so I can do my Tail of the Dragon van.... cheers
