I had my shocks changed out and I changed my power steering fluid. About 20 miles afterward a grinding noise that is definitely rotational showed up. I checked the trans fluid and its clean, clear and has no burning odor, Trans not slipping, all up and downshifts good -even in kickdown mode, however intermittent noise rises and falls more with engine rpm rather than wheel speed. I checked the ebrake and its operating properly stopped or in motion. Checked u joints, no clicking or unusual movement. Noise present on acceleration but fades with speed or by taking foot off the throttle. All vacuum and emissions functioning properly.

Any ideas anyone? 305 F code automatic.
Thanx, Doone

Sounds like the steering pump to me. What fluid did you use?

Never changed PS fluid in 50 years of wrenching. In a steering pump /box the fluid is basically hydraulic fluid. No real wear factor.

Thanks, in a 38 y o truck it does tend to become dirty, especially if prior owners neglected to properly service.

Hi Doone, Welcome to the site!

I've have had quite a few bearing failures in the Rotating assembly on the Serpentine systems in my "Newer," model Vans. West Texas is HARD on vehicles...

Also half a dozen Alternator bearing failures of the years. An AC clutch bearing failure will make that noise as well. Try and isolate it with a mechanics stethoscope. BE Extremely careful.

Daaaamn Ben, and I thought I was an Old Dog... Cheers!

Thanx 4 your reply, I just changed out the ps fluid again and will take 4 a cruise tonite to see if that eliminated that possibility. I dont think its the alt as I changed that out about 1500 miles ago and it works fine. I will check out the a/c clutch next, hadnt thought of that, it blows real cold and theres no burnt smell in that area. I will get a hold of a stethoscope to listen to the idler pulley and belts as you suggested. 'Preciate your help pardner, lots of open space between those west Texas towns I hear.

Hi Doone,

Ha! Yes. Definitely wide open spaces 'round here. Uh Oh, that song is stuck in my head now.

I should add, the bad AC clutch bearing gets worse and sounds like a box of rocks. That bearing carries the load when the AC is off. When the AC is on, the front bearing inside the compressor is load bearing.

I've gone through 2 rebuilt bad alternator bearing failures lately on the 120 amp in the B350. Not sure if I should buy new, but the $150 looks better in my pocket, and to me it's only time that I spend working on the Van. I'm getting better at it, But it is getting old...

On the lift situation, I've found a tire shop that I Iike here, spent some money, well, a lot of money with 3 Vans and a Mexican Dodge, and stop in occasionally. They do it for me, but it is Texas...

Catch them when it's slow, see if they'll do you a solid. Doesn't hurt to ask. Good Wrenching Doone!
