Frame modification around early 70s tradesman steering box | Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 34 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 34 | Alright guys, I just had tge front end re worked and aligned. New upper and lower control arm bushings, new drag link, new cemter link, new coil springs, new shocks, new idler arms. Ball joints were replaced a couple years ago... she drives great! But the only thing left to address is the issue that apparently these early dodge tradesmens have with the frame cracking around the steering box. Mine has cracked before and was “modified†by a previous owner with what looks like a piece of lawn mower blade and some dirt dobber welds lol. It’s begun to crack again and my steering wheel couldn’t be aligned because it’s actually flexing the frame. Basically the alignment guy said he couldn’t straighten the wheel because of this issue. So I want to start lookin into a fix. Does anyone have a link to someone tackling this? If not I would like to fix it right and potentially upload and offer this fix to you guys here. | | | Re: Frame modification around early 70s tradesman steering box | Joined: Mar 2012 Posts: 255 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Mar 2012 Posts: 255 | Would love to see a picture if ya got one. I can weld a good weld but you are a little for from me. I am interested in this though as I though about making a reinforcement for this spot as a preventive measure myself. | | | Re: Frame modification around early 70s tradesman steering box | Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 34 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Jul 2015 Posts: 34 | Would love to see a picture if ya got one. If I can figure out the best way to upload pics I definitely will! Seems hard to do on this forum, at least from a cell phone. | | | Re: Frame modification around early 70s tradesman steering box | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 2,969 Likes: 64 veteran | veteran Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 2,969 Likes: 64 | | | | Re: Frame modification around early 70s tradesman steering box | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 3,456 Likes: 24 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 3,456 Likes: 24 | I had mine done by a buddy and it is strong now. Is it in the how to? | | | Re: Frame modification around early 70s tradesman steering box | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 2,969 Likes: 64 veteran | veteran Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 2,969 Likes: 64 | Do a search in the Dodge forum. Type in frame repair or steering box, quite a few old topics come up. I did newer than 20 years, older than 3 years in the search dates to find the subjects. | | |
