10-12 is about average. Fully inflate your tires, carry less weight, go no faster than 55, accelerate slowly, run synthetic oil, run the factory temp thermostat, use overdrive if your van has it. If you make it to 14 MPG, let us know.

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!

Every motor combo has it's "sweet spot". My Cummins RAM gets better MPGs at 90 then at 75. My 69 Grand Prix(stock 400/M-40/3.23s) returned better MPGs at 85 then at 55.Now this was back in the day ,so fuel formulation might have been a factor. One thing I do know is that "driving 55mph" is not practical , nor reasonable and sometimes it's suicidal. Not only that ,our vans were never designed with 55 MPH in mind.

Get a vacuum gauge and drive by it. You'll learn where the engine "likes" to be.

As to overdrives , they are nice and do work , but they need to be part of the entire "package". Just tossing a OD on your van could hurt fuel economy worse than running just 3 or 4 speed .

If you want better mileage, don't drive something that weighs 2.5 tons and has the aerodynamic characteristics of a barn.

I have a 305 with 4 speed overdrive manual in my G20 and the best I have ever managed is 15 and that was completely unloaded with nothing in it (empty cargo van) and nearly all highway never going over 60 mph.

I do want to swap to a 5.3 LS at some point, and I'm curious how much better mileage that may net me. Not that I really care, just something I wonder about lol.

The real "stars" of that type of swap are the great six speed transmissions and the engine/trans control systems with the tow/haul option.... yay

My 5.0L engine struggles going up little inclines and I have to downshift out of OD a lot while doing highway driving. The best MPG I can muster is about 16 mpg and that is keeping the speed under 70 and "drafting" one of those large 18 wheeler tractor trailer rigs. Otherwise, I manage about 13 - 14 mpg under normal circumstances.

I was getting around 10mpg when I first bought my van (91 Vandura 2500 with a 5.7 with198k on it) I thought that it surly could do better, so I simply started by replacing my spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. Now, I'm around 15-16 city mpgs. My air filter is still pretty dirty but they didn't have a k&n in stock so it's in the mail, I hope that helps it out a bit too.
