What did you replace ?

Id pop it back off & clean out the female end.

Hammering it on when its not right doesnt help, but makes more problems.

I replaced the steering gear box. Way too much play. I replaced all the steering components last year but not the gear box until now. By hammering I meant lightly tapped with hammer. Ain't no way I'm gonna hammer that thing. I don't need problems. Lol. Ya, I'm gonna have to get into the female end with some kind of wire brush. Years of dirt in there. Man, trying to remove from the old gear box was another story. By the way, the family and I have spent a lot of time restoring this van and boy has it been fun. This van is almost done. The final touch will be a fresh paint job.

Did you have to turn in the old one as a core ?

If not measure it & see if the new one is the same size.

Im guessing its the wrong one..

The core seems to be the same. I did have a heck of a time removing the steering from the old box. The female end looks really gunked up and a bit rusted. I'm gonna have to take a wire brush in there, lube it up, and that should be fine. It was the original box that was removed.

Wedge something in the split of the sleeve. A screwdriver or something should be sufficient to spread the sleeve enough to be able to install on the shaft of the gear box. Also, are you trying to install it upside down? I seem to remember the bolt on the sleeve went on the flat spot on the shaft, and yours looks to be backwards.

Ya, a screwdriver should work to split open the sleeve. I don't believe it's upside down. I keep checking every time I install. But then again I could be doing it upside down and think it was going in the right way.
