On your overhead console, I'm not tall, but I notice my seating positions in the Vans, leaves little headroom.
Campervan is very close, but I can wear a hat and lower the seat. Lol. Even in the Chevy, I have to lean forward to see the hanging stoplights. No Visor, for sure. Ha!
You may not be old enough to remember, but check your "Max Headroom!"

I am a nice and short 5' 8" and I don't wear hats so I do have an advantage in the headroom department.
I am slightly concerned about impacting my head in an accident so I will probably reduce the front to back depth a bit. I have a Cobra CB radio that I want to mount in the center and I don't want it to stick out, so it is going to come out at least that far,but no more. As for the height, my very high tech cardboard mock-up is perfectly level with the top edge of the windshield which seems to be about the standard height. We'll see how it turns out I suppose. | | | Re: Tuner4life's Big Ballin, Racecar Haulin, 4 Speed Manual G20 | Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 2,286 Likes: 153 veteran | veteran Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 2,286 Likes: 153 | That interior is going to be so custom, great thing about doing it yourself! "Make it so, Number 1!"
My B250 O head console has a center pod for the radio that drops down a bit in the middle. The design is similar to what you describe, which leaves additional driver/passenger room overhead. | | | Re: Tuner4life's Big Ballin, Racecar Haulin, 4 Speed Manual G20 | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 282 Likes: 18 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 282 Likes: 18 | I too would be concerned with a too tall console. I had one in my Suburban years ago and took it out cuz it was just too low. I'm sure you will make it great and then the rest of us will have to copy your design. | | | Re: Tuner4life's Big Ballin, Racecar Haulin, 4 Speed Manual G20 | Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 old hand | OP old hand Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 | Haha Thanks! I'll try to remember to trace all the parts so they can be re-created. | | | Re: Tuner4life's Big Ballin, Racecar Haulin, 4 Speed Manual G20 | Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 old hand | OP old hand Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 | I had my wife take a look and give her thoughts on the overhead console, and she agrees that the height is fine, but it does stick too far back. I've got a few ideas and am going to get some MDF over the weekend and try some things out. I am excited about this thing more than I should be. Here is the wife modeling the head -> cardboard clearance: | | | Re: Tuner4life's Big Ballin, Racecar Haulin, 4 Speed Manual G20 | Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 old hand | OP old hand Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 | I think I found a solution for a scratch built headliner and wall paneling. FRP (fiber reinforced paneling). This stuff is used for shower walls and is all plastic so it should be immune to moisture and humidity unlike wood. It is textured on one side, but very smooth on the other. Should be able to easily attach whatever material I want to this stuff. It is also fairly lightweight and also flexible so it should make the headliner arch no problem, but it's not so flexible where I think it would flap around between mounting points, if it does, it should be easy enough to attach some supports to firm it all up.. We'll see I guess. Looks promising anyways. It's sold at Lowes in 4x8 sheets for $25. | | | Re: Tuner4life's Big Ballin, Racecar Haulin, 4 Speed Manual G20 | Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 old hand | OP old hand Joined: Sep 2013 Posts: 1,015 Likes: 19 | MDF acquired. I'm going to start the construction of the over head console tonight. Here is the rough mock up in cardboard of what I'm going with.. The CB will fit in the middle panel. and on the driver's and passenger side, the console will lean away slightly so the panel is angled down. Then at the outside edges, there will be pods for some 6'5" speakers. The upper edge of the console will be straight across. The main construction will be MDF, but there will be some fiberglass work to tie in the odd shaped areas. | | |
