So here's my question:

If I have a virgin shorty panel from the 70's. am I better off leaving it alone, or cutting into it by putting a porthole window in?
I know personal preference plays a part, but you really have to love that bowtie to make it a permanant fixture.

2 foot by 3 foot. That's a big bowtie.

Bowtie ports are too large. they would have looked a lot better if they were made a little smaller. they pull big bucks though when in good shape

I have an NOS set, and the actual measurements are 10 3/4" x 30". My wife keeps saying she is going to put one in the tailgate of one of our Tahoe's or Blazer's, which might look pretty cool. The Chevy musclecar guys like these also to display with there Vette's or Camaro's. A friend has a bad-ass Camaro and he says he would like to have a big air scoop on the hood with the bowties mounted on each side. Lots of possibilities. When these ports where being made, GM stepped in and threatened a lawsuit, saying it was an infringement on their patent trademark and logo, hence, why they are so rare to find. I have been offered $1500 for mine. As for the question of cutting metal for a set, I would never cut a hole in the side of virgin sheet metal on a van, plus, what if you install something like this and one breaks, where you ever going to find a replacement.

Good info.
I make signs for a living, so cutting and heat forming clear and tinted acrylic is pretty easy for me. The porthole Windows (acrylic) is nothing but a light box or channel, letter with no LEDs. I always thought if I put one in, I would backlight it to show at night. A translucent tropical fish bowl print maybe.

If the market ever returned, I’m ready to start making ‘one offs’ on the Cnc router.

Cheers.

Maybe you should start making some in your spare time. I bet they would fly off the shelves again !!!

Lettercraft, so if I broke a porthole in my van or needed a replacement, you would be able to make one? That would be great and I believe there is a market out there and has been since the mid 1980s when these companies stopped making ports.
