hey guys...dads van is an 87 b150 with slant 6 and 4 speed 833 manual transmission...i had the pressure plate, clutch and bearing replaced about a year ago and it shifts in and out of gear with no grinding/problems but the clutch is definately a mans clutch as it is pretty hard to push down....granted i only have to depress it about 3 inches to shift but it takes a toll on ya with intown driving.....is there any way to make it easier to push??? or do i just need to chalk it up to being a workin mans van and eat more biscuits?? thanks for any suggestions

Hey DV,

Awesome Van DadsVanman!
You need to add a beater with an automatic to the fleet?

I fondly remember the '69 327 swap into my C10 shorty. Did the same thing as you, drove it with a stiff clutch for 10 years, rowing a 4 speed. Many, many burnouts. It was a stock Chevy clutch, it did not slip.

Loaned the truck to my FILaw. He pulled a packed P30 up and down, over the Grapevine, moving his shop to NorCal. Manual steering, drum brakes, no power assist. On a towbar. Chuckle. Yes, he said it was Hairy. You wouldn't get that 10 feet past the CHP today. Chuckle.

Not sure which was worse now, pushing the clutch for ten years?
Or getting T-boned totalled, hit on the drivers side, ending the misery...
Ouch.

But your Van is way rare, I'd keep it if I could, and put the miles on the beater, if you can.

Good luck, and Van On!

Check linkage geometry. If it's bent, this could be your issue. Also make sure all bushings are in place and lubed(Z bar in particularly). Chrysler offered two different adjustment rods one was heavy duty for high HP applications. If you have a stiff diaphragm it could be flexing the standard rod. This is the rod that contacts the clutch fork.

Edit: just re-read your post. 3 inches is an awfully short throw. Something in adjustment or even correct/in-correct linkage parts.

How far off the floor does it grab?

i think you are onto something...thanks for the tip....i stopped by shop today and had fella take a look...there is what appears to be some bad bushings at the linkage part that elbows back towards tranny and also looks like it is leaning sideways a lil bit and not straight up and down.....we also suspect that the linkage rod going through firewall has been rubbing on the firewall due to geometry not being a straight up and down movement.....i desperately need to find a part number for these bushings but have had no luck.....cant even find a detailed pic naming all the parts......heeeelllppp....

Try one of the MOPAR resto houses. I'll bet money they are the same as & B-bodies.

I looked in my 1988 FSM, but alas, it looks like Dodge went to a hydraulic clutch setup that year. An earlier FSM should show the assembly.

I Found the Chevy parts books on Ebay, but don't see Mopar much. Ebay is hit or miss anyway. But once in a while...
Just gotta start digging!

Good suggestion about cross references for part numbers. "The Truth is out there..."

Dodge Van with a stick, better pack a lunch.

Good Hunting!

I have several different year Dodge van shop manuals from the 80s as well as a 1982-1983 Dodge parts manual. If you give me some time I can scan and post the relevant diagrams for your clutch linkage and maybe even get you some part numbers. I have a busy day at work today, so I might not get to it until tonight or tomorrow.

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!

thanks guys....just to be clear...its not the zbar....i dont know what its called but if you start looking from the clutch pedal there is a linkage rod that goes through floorboard and then it connects to another rod going back to the zbar and tranny........the bushings at that connection are the wore out ones.....but on a side note i plan on replacing the zbar as well as it prolly needs it after 360k miles....haaaa....thanks reed,,,,,yup i love the lil slant6 but often wonder how kinky it would be to have a 318 powering that 833 stick tranny....this 833 has a wicked low gear and very torquey...my guess is with a 318 it would be quicker out of the hole than a chicken with his arse on fire,,,,

If you really get the V-8 urge,go get a 360. No point in a 318 from your "position". More HP and not a hell of a lot of difference in fuel economy. Is that 833 a 4 -speed or a 3
with OD?
BTW-NEVER,EVER stop looking for parts like these even when you get your issue straightened out. Stock pile them.
