Looking for the best aftermarket A/C system that will fit in a 1971 Chevy van.

Define "best."

The two companies, Classic auto air & Vintage auto air don't list any van applications.

My advice is get creative either with generic underdash units or aftermarket conversion van units or overhead units from other vehicles, such as rear AC from a Suburban.

^^^^^^

Edit: try RV boneyards first. Find what years should swap and start looking. Under-hood stuff is about universal. Under-dash is gonna be van specific but might fit more years than you think.

Pat, your options are pretty limited. As stated above, aftermarket "kits" made just for vans are non-existent. If you can find a donor with A/C (at a donor price) it would most likely be trashed or missing pieces. But with patience you may find everything. Like Ben said, arm yourself with knowledge of what will fit and be prepared to hunt.
A generic kit (as shown) or using a rear air system, as Reed said, from a mid 90's Suburban might be your choices. I have such a Suburban rear system in my '88 Ford hi-top and I usually run it by its self to cool the van.

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping someone on here already did this and had a co and model they could suggest.

Find a GOOD boneyard. And start cross referencing underdash parts. They'll be able to tell you what will fit. ANd then you'll be able to tell what will work because if it has a different part number-the cross reference book will say it won't fit ,when in reality it will.
