I'm looking to purchase a 1977 B200 318 with an automatic transmission. One of the more concerning problems with it is that its leaking tranny fluid everywhere. The owner replaced the pan and gasket assuming this was the source of the leak. Unfortunately it wasn't. We both agreed that its possible that the solenoid is bad? Does anyone have experience with replacing an old solenoid pack on one of these transmissions? I cant seem to find the part anywhere online. Is this an easy job or should I just take it to a professional (I dont have much transmission experience).

The transmission is entirely hydraulically controlled and has no electronic solenoids. The valve body does the job of the solenoid pack, and dropping the valve body is easy but not likely to cure any leaks.
Likely leak points are: dipstick tube o-ring, front main input shaft seal, gear selector shaft seal, rear output shaft seal. neutral start switch seal, speedo cable fitting seal (largely in that order).
I wouldn't hesitate buying the van just because the trans leaks. Get a factory service manual for the van and see that every seal except the input shaft seal can be replaced without any serious disassembly or removal of the transmission. Seals are cheap, too.

As you can see my knowledge of transmissions and especially old transmissions is sub par. | | | Re: 1977 B200 Transmission leak | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | No worries, we all start somewhere.

Also love having digital copies of stuff so if anyone made a pdf of it that would be awesome!

I prefer hard copies because it is easier to flop a book open on the radiator support panel than to haul a computer out there. Plus I can read a shop manual in bed at night. Seriously. What do you read to go to sleep?

Another question. I'm going to have to do some electrical work (blinkers, fuel gauge, stereo etc arnt working). Would I need a specific electrical manual or is the one I posted above comprehensive enough to have all the wiring diagrams? | | | Re: 1977 B200 Transmission leak | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | The factory service manual will have all of the wiring diagrams for your van.

Put it up on stands power wash the tranny. then start it up and lay underneath and watch for leaks.
Also replace fusible links with circuit breakers when you get into the electrical issues.
