This weekend my 93 G 20 Van wouldn't start. The key went in and turned but nothing happened. The battery was fine.

So it turned out that there is a rod that runs down the steering column that moves when you turn the key. That movement is a switch that sends electricity to the starter motor. If I turn on the key and moved the rod forward slightly (with pliers) the starter engaged and the engine started. Then I pulled the rod back. Any idea how to fix this or why this happened.

My '93 does that now after the accident. I can turn it a couple times, bumping, and it starts. I have gone to the parts store & they say a column repair kit, tried that & the part I need isnt in the kit. SO I went to the bone yard & pulled a steering column to put into the '93. Im tired of messing with it & offroadin it isnt going to make it better..... so replace it....lol But this one is a tilt not right for offroadin,,,, things that I hold on to have a habit of breaking ...lol

May just tear into this one & grab the the gear rack & push rod.
