I have a 96 1 ton vandura that has scared me but good. I drove it home 50 miles on the freeway, and it was great until I hit the off ramp. Then it started shaking bad when I tried to slow down. In town it stops ok. Today I drove it home, and on the way I got cut off, and when I stomped the brakes, it made a horrendous noise but kept on rolling. Sources say it's the anti lock system failing. I think I found the fuse in a drawing somewhere, but am unsure what to do.

Even when your ABS isnt working you still have manual brakes ... if it made noise while stopping Id check your calipers & rotors 1st. then make sure you dont have air in your system .

No the ABS is basically power brakes ... the braking system without power asst will still stop the van. My ABS light has been on for 10 yrs. The brakes will work without the power asst, if it is the ABS system.

But that noise is another animal, it sounded mechanical ?

Did the pedal go to the floor ?

The noise was it a metallic sound ? like metal grinding ?

Did it sound like a gurgle like the brake res has air in it ?

Did it pull one way or another ? While hard on the brake ?

Sounded like a sick buzzer for a doorway. Pedal went way down, and the van kept rolling, but then stopped slowly. Felt like only 1 brake was working. Van didn't swerve but did nose dive. I have been driving vans for years, owned 2 diesel 6.2 GM vans with hydro boost, and a bunch of gassers. All light 3/4 or half ton vans. This is the first full; floater van I have owned. Owned a couple 8 bolt pickups but never in all my years have I had a truck stop in such a way. Was told to disconnect ABS and it would solve the issue, just have to locate the fuse.

Disconnecting the ABS fuse wont put fluid to the calipers to stop the van.
People that dont like ABS blame it for every thing & say disconnect or get rid of it.
Honestly I think its low on fluid, has air in the system or the porp valve is stuck ....

Looks like I have a lot of work to do. I will bleed the van, and inspect the brakes. Previous owner did replace at least one brake line. I was told everything was safe to travel with, I drove it 50 miles down the interstate with no issues until I got to my off ramp. That was when it made a lot of racket and shook hard enough to scare me. Drove it across town twice with no issues, twice, taking it to two different locations for storage. Then today bringing it home I get the shock of my life trying to avoid hitting two cars that deliberately pulled into my path. I had just finished driving 500 miles in my sisters car helping her out, and then this happens. I wonder how those two people would feel if they found out that I couldn't stop. I need to fix this van or ditch it before it kills someone. Thanks for the help.

G30...is this a hydro-boost system? Is this sick buzzer sound a warning of low system boost / pressuere?
