Hi, some of you might know I have spent the last few weeks stripping and preparing my `80 G10 for a repaint.
As the paint on the van was Acrylic I decided to repaint in acrylic in my shed at home, my plan was to keep applying coats of the base colour til I was satisfied it was ready then hire a booth for the final colour and clear coats. So far so good.
A few days ago I contacted two spray painters for a quote on finishing the job, I already have the paint and the clear,
Both were within a few dollars of each other in price for the paintwork, but one said `you should do it in two Pac, it'll be a much better job`, he showed me a `67 Barracuda he had just finished, sure enough it looked great, even right up close there was no orange peel that I could see...

My problem is.
I have already spent around $700 on acrylic paint and primer.. with 4Litres paint and clear on hand for the final job.

If I go 2Pac, I will have wasted $700 + on materials as the van will have to be re-primered, then done in 2Pac, this will be approx $600 extra cost for materials.

Am I correct in thinking that an acrylic clear over base can look just as good as 2pac?
At least with Acrylic, future nicks or scratches can be repaired locally without respraying the whole panel.

I'm struggling to see the value in spending what amounts to spend an additional $1300.. on what in my opinion would be a negligible difference in the finished product. Plus I will have the 4L left which I cant use or return.
I`d be interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks,

I used to sell Dupont paint many years ago, the 2 pac they had was supposed to emulate the look of base clear paint. So base clear was better looking but a lot of guys liked the 2 pac, I think it was easier for them. I would make sure the painter is familiar with the product you bring them. I brought product to a painter once and they only used half the hardner in the clear coat that it called for, it looked good but took forever to harden. I would use the base clear paint that you have providing the painter is comfortable using it and has used it before with good results.

Thanks Metz, I have no doubt that he is very capable and would have no trouble using acryilc paint, I would say you are right in thinking he just prefers the finish he gets with 2pac, I`ll pop up to his shop tomorrow and have a further chat with him. I`ll keep you posted
cheers.

Bit the bullet today and decided to go 2 pac, cant keep up with the indecision, gotta get on with it, its going in tomorrow for that final rubdown...... reprimer...... then wham bam thank you van, should be done by friday, get it back home and commence the slow steady process of refitting everything, plus the new stuff I bought.. central locking kit, power window kit, new front carpet, continue the search for a set of 15" wheels... etc etc etc.

When I first read the title of this thread, I was fairly sure it was about some kind of rap music showdown. LOL
