My 93 Diesel G30 needs new springs. Ive acquired the proper HD coils and Firestone 4100 Bags that go inside the coils.

I have never done coils before. The dealer service manual says that I need the front on jackstands with front end floatong, disconnect the sway bar, chain the spring to the upper arm, and put a jack with a special cradle under the lower A-arm pivot tube. Then Im supposed toremove the unolts holding the pivot and carefully lower the jack and the lower A-Arm until the spring is no longer compressed!

This sounds nuts. Im imagining the entire spring blowing out as the A-arm flails around attached to the knuckle. Has anyone done this replacement or the G20-to-30 coil spring lift who can tell me how to perform this without killing myself or breaking things?

Thanks,
-A guy who who prefer to not be dead

Not sure about a G30, but that is the exact procedure that i used on my G20 with no issues at all.

Did you have the cradle tool or just a jack under the arm?

I want to clarify:

-you kept both ball joints attached

-put a jack under the lower arm pivot on the FRAME side

-removed the u-bolts holding the lower arm pivot to the frame

-then eased the lower arm from the frame by slowly releasing the jack?

No. That sounds super sketchy!

-Put jack under control arm, either under the ball joint, or under the cup where the spring fits.

-Loosen nut on lower ball joint, but do not remove it.

-Using a hammer on the side of the spindle around where the ball joint stud goes through. A couple of good whacks usually breaks the 2 pieces loose. The non-removed nut will keep the spring from slamming the arm down and the spring from shooting out. I leave the jack under there just for peace of mind.

-raise the jack enough to relieve stress from ball joint nut and remove the nut

-Lower the jack slowly all the way down. There should be virtually no tension on the spring once the arm is lowered.

Yep as above I've done it that way on my 79 G30 camper a few times with no problems.

-Lower the jack slowly all the way down. There should be virtually no tension on the spring once the arm is lowered.

At this step make sure you open valve to lower the jack nice and slowly as said above.
