Hello, I was looking for a police car at a local auction, but they went too high for me and I ended up with a 1991 Chevy Police Van instead. Bo Derek was a "10", and my van is one too, but not so perfect anymore. I'm sure that stands for Bo too. It isn't bad though, no rust(or I would not have bought it) only has 68k miles, which was quite a bit lower than the police cars I was looking at and the price was right. It has a V6 auto, with air, new tires, everything works and it drives very nice. This is my 1st van. The paint is the worst as all the police markings were crudely removed. The interior has many holes where the police equipment was removed, but the seats are good and so is the dash. The back is empty, except for the separator screen and mat. I don't know what it was used for. It has no odors or dog hair, so I just don't know. I like to go dirt bike riding so I won't need my trailer so much now. I was looking for a police car because I wanted a good freeway vehicle. I drive a K5 blazer(CUCV) which is a diesel that really is not built for freeway speed, think 55. I'm hoping this van will cruise a little bit higher. What should I expect? What mileage should I expect at freeway speed? This van appears to have few options. AC is the only thing that stands out, but I will look for the ID plate. It does have what looks like the base am/fm radio/tape deck. What problems does this model of van have that I should look out for? Are there things that I should be gentle with? I think I will name it Bo and see if my boys can figure that out. When I was leaving the auction yard a sicko yelled "put candy on the sides".

Thanks for the welcome! I'm easy on equipment, by that I mean I don't abuse my stuff. I want take care of this van, and I'm concerned about nuances that I don't know about that every vehicle seems to have. For instance on the '84 Blazer I have, the manual rear window must be gently rolled up and down or the latch will break. Are there any things like this on a '91 Chevy van? Another question is cruising speed with the 4.3 v6. It has the 700 that has overdrive. Where is the sweet spot as in cruising speed? The last vehicle I had(the van replaces it) was a 2000 Buick Lasabre, cruise all day at 70 and get 29 mpg, actually not the kind or look of vehicle I would buy. It was inherited, but it was totaled out in a hit and run, and I miss it's abilities. It was very comfortable too. I know the van's MPG won't compare well with the Buick or the acceleration as it was pretty decent. I'm wondering how much I will like 3 to 500 mile trips in the van and wonder how you guys cope.
Welcome to the group! Your van looks great. I've been considering getting a short window van like that one.
My '92 is a long wheel base with a V8 (5.7 liter). Its absolute favorite speed is 69 mph. It drives well at all speeds, but when it hits 69, it's like a boat that's up on plane. LOL Mine averages around 13 mpg, but all the guys here say that's low.
As far as stuff to be gentle with... can't think of anything off the top of my head... our vans are pretty usable, and many of the parts carry over from other GM models.
Thanks Rusty! I was hoping there wasn't anything fragile. This van has the sliding door and it is kinda hard to shut. It seems to require some force. I'm going to lube it up to see if that helps. Does your v-8 come with the overdrive transmission? This one does have the overdrive and I was wondering, since this is my 1st experience with it, when it is in drive without the overdrive are the shift points higher or is the only difference between he 2 D's is that the overdrive is available or not? I have the turbo 400 in my diesel 84 blazer and it needs another gear for better mileage and higher top speed, if that is what you have behind your v-8. So far we like driving it around town, but that is all we have done, it is easy to see out of with all the glass.
