I tried to do an oil chamge on my 89 E150 yesterday and made a nasty discovery. My van has a 1984 351W in it. I have never had a problem spinning oil filters right onto the pipe sticking out of the block. However, when I went to install the new Purolator oil filter yesterday, it would not sit properly on the pipe and thread on. I examined it carefully and the body of the filter was hitting the front edge of the driver's side engine mount.

I examined the old Napa brand oil filter and the new Purolator filter and discovered that the Purolator filter is constructed in such a way that there is a lip around the bottom of the filter where the metal has been rolled and crimped to seal the base plate to the filter housing. This lip sticks out roughly 1/16 inch. This lip was not present on the old Napa filter body. I went and bought a new STP brand filter and it had the lip, too.

So for now I am still running the old used Napa oil filter until I can figure out a fix. I likely will end up pulling the driver's side motor mount and grinding the front lip a little bit to get some clearance.

So be warned- the number of manufacturers making these oil filters is dwindling and they are not verifying fitment when they change designs. Be ready to make some changes to keep your veicles on the road.

UPDATE- I was able to snake an angle grinder up onto the driver's side motor mount after i removed the oil filter and grind enough of the front edge of the mount of to fit a new oil filter on. It doesn't take much- about 1/16 of an inch. That is enough for my clearance issue to be due to casting flash or manufacturing defect on the motor mount, but still it is a pain. I did confirm that the oil filter cases are manufactured differently and the lip on the new oil filters is bigger than the lip on the older ones. The old lip was flush or even recessed from the wall of the oil filter but the new lip protrudes beyond the filter wall. This is a manufacturing method change.

I used to have a list of filters that were made by the same manufacturer, but branded differently...
It might have helped us to figure out how many filters were affected in this recent manufacturing change, but it was an older list, and companies merge, fail, and change vendors, so who knows how helpful it would have been.

I found another one, which is similar, but it's almost 10 years old. It won't cover this recent change, of course, but it might shed some light on what filters will have that same new lip.
