In my van i have noticed my speedometer is off it varies depending on how fast you are going. I was wondering if there is a rebuild kit for the gauge cluster because the speed sensors have been replaced and that still did not fix it. any help or info would be appreciated.

Hi Dodgerocks, love your nym! smile

To start at the simple end of the spectrum, out of curiosity, are the correct size rear tires on your van? They should be listed on the data plate decal in the driver's door frame, if the conversion company didn't remove it.

What is the mileage on the odometer? If something is worn, that might help point where to look. A 1997 might not even have a direct mechanical connection to the cluster; that year is late enough it might be electronic. If you see this post, what do you think Reed?

Does your van have cruise control?

Can you see what sort of connections there are at the back of the instrument cluster if you peek up under the dash? What does the sender mounted at the rear of the transmission, and its cabling look like? Try tracing the cables back towards the front of the van, especially if there's a big one, about 3/8" in diameter. A couple of pictures would help us greatly, if you can get at those areas.

I've rebuilt and calibrated my speedo before. Mine used to bounce all over the place. If you take apart the speedo you will find if memory recalls 3 electrolytic capacitors, replace those. To calibrate it was a little tricky. What I did was put the rear axle up on stands and then using a scan tool to view the vehicle speed from the speed sensor I held the vehicle at 35MPH carefully by footwork between brake and gas pedal and then inserted the speedo needle with the pointer at 35MPH. It took a few tries before I got the needle in perfectly. The foot just tends to move when pushing the needle in lol. I then proceeded to find one of the speed signs the police put all over to tell us our speed limit and well at 35MPH the speedo said 35MPH and at 50 it read 51 etc... Another way of verifying is by cruise activation. Cruise control on my van can only be activated at speeds of 35MPH and up. So I drove until the speedo read 35 and put cruise control on and it worked. I tried at 30 and no dice and tried at 32.5-33 and no dice. Once the needle hit 35 it would let me put it on, so it was dead on.

Anyways. After replacing the capacitors the speedo reading was different than before replacing the caps. I'm sure after 20 years you have some electrolytic caps that have really changed in capacitance or moreso in ESR.
