After replacing the rear drum brakes I've been having them get hotter than the front brakes after driving on the freeway for a bit.

I loosened the parking brake equalizer as it was fully locking the drum in 1 click now it's at the proper adjustment.

I've determined the issue seems to be the shoes slightly stick out and drag against the drum after releasing the parking brake from fully on. Once I take the drum off and put it back on the shoes go back in and it spins freely again until I set the parking brake then release it, then it starts dragging again.

Any ideas what would be causing this, it has all new springs and I put anti seize on the backing plate contact points.

After doing a few tests, the brake shoes seem to not want to return all the way after any movement of the shoes by either the parking brake or regular service brake. One side is better than the other but even it still gets stuck out randomly.

I disconnected the parking brake on one side and it was still sticking after pushing the regular brake pedal.

I bought all new springs but they were carquest aftermarket specified for my model, they seem tight enough but maybe they're not strong enough to fully pull them back to center? The backing plates were kinda crusty and not perfectly smooth but I cleaned them up as best I could but they're still not perfect.

Did you say you replaced the wheel cylinders or just shoes and springs?

New wheel cylinders too.

I tried removing a little brake fluid from the rear reservoir, since it's so small it doesn't take much to overfill it, but it didn't help.

Did you lubricate the contact points between the shoes and backing plate? I think this is more for noise, really...to prevent squeaks as the shoes travel over the plate, but it can't hurt to do it it if you didn't.

I did but it could be that there's still some high spots from rust that could be hanging it up, might have the sand it down some more.

I swapped back in the original springs, they seemed to fit better as the new adjuster hook had been contacting one of the springs
but it didn't seem to make much difference. I'll probably have to get it all back together then have a shop take a look.

Gotta replace one of my new wheel cylinders already as the seal is leaking.

After sanding the contact points smooth and backing off the adjuster more the brakes aren't getting as hot as they were.

I took Grandma on a ride today for the first time since August 6th,1999 when we drove out to trade it in.

Would these help with your interior, until you can find some EXACT Gladiator parts?
