All of the plugs were brand new yesterday when we fired it up. None of them are showing damage. Here are the pictures of the inside of the passenger side valve cover. It is filthy but aside from that I don't see anything apparent that could be wrong.

Hey, that looks pretty good! Not any sludge buildup, nice and clean. Yay!

Here's a dumb question. Can I start the van with the cover off?

Yes. Oil will leak a bit, but it looks like it has been doing that anyway. I would cover up the floor and any interior upholstered bits near that side of the engine first.

This is close to the noise I'm hearing only mine is louder and happens randomly and not a seemingly timed intervals. it really does sound like when something metal gets sucked into a vacuum cleaner.

I may fire it up and see if I can record the noise so folks can see what I'm talking about.

Not a bad idea. That way you can see if the clacking noise is a rocker arm due to a failed lifter or loose bolt.

Sounding like metal sucked into a vacuum cleaner is more likely to be something in the actual cylinder bouncing around.
