When I did my last van I bought 2 4x8 sheets of that 1 inch thick blue foam used for home insulation. I cut it in panels to fit tight between the ribs in the roof and walls. Was cheap, easy to work with, lite and made a big difference in mine

The prep on the wall depends on where you live & are planning on going.

I see your in so cal, so moisture isnt a big deal. If you planning on going to the north, mid or east part of the country that foam will collect & hold moisture & slowly rust your van away.

Be careful on the type of mat'l you choose.

There are tons of different options out there for soundproofing and insulations. depends what and where your soundproofing and what insulation qualities you want.
I am converting a gmc vandura to a camper and I used some recycled denim insulation with foil radiant barrier on the floor and foil faced foam board on the walls and ceiling. I used great stuff foam to fill all the voids and the used foil faced tape to cover all the seams.

I also stuffed sealed bags of loose fill cellulose in door pockets and larger voids

I also used a vapor barrier, which can be as simple as large plastic bags seam taped together or the more 'high tec' vapor barriers that control direction of air and moisture.

All the insulation in itself is a great sound deadener.

I also used Noico Black 80 Mil sheets for sound deadening around wheel wells and my nice loud diesel engine. These are tons of different varieties and types of this stuff, depending on the material used and the price you want to spend. This will help with vibrational noises as well as heat control if it has a radiant layer on it.

I just ran across this thread and wanted to chime with my 2 cents worth. As others have said, you need to be aware of moisture when you insulate. I am opposed to a moisture barrier because it will trap moisture in your insulation. This will cause rust. Imagine it is spring, You van is warm inside, and it is still cool and moist outside. Water will condense on the sheet metal inside your van. This moisture needs to go somewhere, and if there is a barrier on the inside, it is trapped.

Sound deadening needs to be applied directly to the sheet metal like those rubberized foil sheets like Dynamat. The sound comes from the outside noise hitting the sheet metal of your van and vibrating it. The noise is then transferred inside. If you stiffen it especially with something sound deadening like rubber you will be good. Those sheets are expensive because they are made for hot rods, which are small. Do a van with it and you will quickly go broke. I was thinking of something like spray on bed liner or other rubberized coating.

Remember, if there is a gap between your insulation and the sheet metal, you will get condensation. Let your thermal insulation breathe.

I agree, the moisture barrier should go directly against the cold sheet metal without gaps to prevent the warmer inside air from contacting the colder metal. Then the thermal insulation should install next to the inside walls.

Check out www.QuietRide.com. They sell a kit containing a combination of Dynamat and another material that sound deadens and insulates. It's pre-cut to your vehicle. Just ordered a kit for my A100, haven't got it yet but they say it insulates the walls, floor, ceiling, doors, and doghouse.

About air gaps and condensation:

My knowledge regarding this subject comes from home insulation but the concepts should be universal. In homes you have two options, either a proper air gap or no air gap. (cold roof or hot roof) I'm surprised that the universal answer here isn't closed cell spray foam directly against the metal. With no air contact to the metal there's no chance for condensation. Leaving an air gap between the insulation and the metal would only eliminate condensation if there was proper ventilation keeping the temp equal on the inside and outside.

Like I said though, all I know is home insulation. Am I missing something?

so there is a product called tiger foam that is flat out amazing. little pricey, but amazing, and not very hard to use. Aside from that I have found the best alternative to insulation for thermal reasons as well as sound deadining is a product call fat mat. It is the same as dynamat, only a little thicker, and a whole lot cheaper. it is easy to work with and can be applied under carpet, door panels, etc. I have done many stealth campers/vans/hot rods, etc with these two products and always had the desired results without a lot of fuss.
