I want to build bench seats along the walls in the rear for more seating. I plan to build a removable table as well and also make the benches pull out to help with closing the gap for a bed when needed. I don't want a permenate bed because I am always hauling bicycles, surf boards and skateboards, etc. so it has to be convertable.

From measurements of the once factore bench seat, I'm thinking maybe 12-14 inches high and 16 inches deep. I'm wondering if anyone has determined the best hight for comfort for sitting at shows as well as trips on the road, also need to take into account the cushion hight.

Road trips brings me to another question, seatbelts for people sitting along the walls on the benches, so they are sitting sideways. I'm not sure if they are required in Florida or at all in van from 1978, but does it make sense to have them if the passengers are sitting sideways vs forward? I want them to be safe in any case, but thinking school buses don't have seat belts, and limos don't use them for sideways sitting passengers. Trying to figure that one out. I still see people riding in the back of pickups down here, so brings the question to mind :-)

your knees should be similar in angle as your driver seat, and the backing of the seat should come out at least 2-4 inches minimum and the top of the back should meet the bottoms of your shoulder blades for best comfort from the smallest possible bench.

This is what I use when building seats for Boats, but i'm sure it has a similar rules with vans.

Hopefully its a start.

Detach the seat from the frame, build your boxes. attach the seats to the box. When you need to haul detach the seats. When done reattach the seats.

Thank you AlleyKatUpholsteryMt, never thought about how boat seats are setup, great food for thought.

Thanks again,
